Ronaldo Turns Back The Clock

By: chris | April 21st, 2009

Everyone expected Ronaldo – né The Fat One – to flash his superior technique and nose for goal back in Brazil. The legs may go, but class remains.

This weekend Ronaldo scored a goal and forced a mess in the announcer’s pants. No surprise there. But it wasn’t the poacher’s goal or cleaning up a mess in front of goal or a header that we all expected. Instead Ronaldo turned back the clock and turned on the jets to easily outsprint his defender over about 30 yards and put in a finisher’s finish. Brazilian television (post-jump) have determined with all sorts of fancy maths that Ronaldo clocked an impressive 36km/h on rickety knees.

Maybe he’s not done quite yet after all?

Kudos for Ronaldo, all the way.

I believe that many fans will sacrifice their body part to see him in his 1997 form. With all due respect to Messi, he is nor even close.

I have a hard time believing Ronaldo reached a sprint speed of roughly 22mph.

The Rio de Janeiro (Carioca) accent always cracks me up. I learned Portuguese in the north-east of Brazil, so hearing him emphasise that “r” in “gordo” when he says “Corre gordinho!” (translation: Run fatty!) really catches my ear.

Fósforo (trans: match) is my favorite word to hear a Carioca say.

There is nothing better than seeing an aging legend bust out a vintage move, completely uncompromised…this was a real match, a real sprint, and an important goal.

Its like watching Shaq in the NBA; he’s supposed to be over the hill for an aging center, so when he scores 30 with 15 rebounds, it makes you feel good.

Maybe this is all because it reminds us of where we were 10-15 years ago when these stars truly dominated, day in, day out?

Thomas, that accent is actually from Sao Paulo. And not even from the city, but from state’s interior.
