San Lorenzo Coach Fires Back at the Crowd, Gets Sent Off

By: Laurie | May 20th, 2008

It hardly seems fair. Ramon Diaz, coach of the Argentinian team San Lorenzo, was sent off this weekend for getting tired of fan abuse and returning fire.

Someone in the stands at Huracan threw what looks like maybe a piece of PVC pipe(?) at him during the game. (It’s in the second half of the video.)

You can’t tell from the video, but news reports say that it missed him.

The object narrowly missed Diaz when it was thrown at him by a supporter and he picked it up and threw it back.

“They threw things at me for the whole game,” he told a news conference after the game. “It was a reaction, and I apologise.”

San Lorenzo’s players were also pelted with objects when they went to take corners.

A stormy match produced red cards for San Lorenzo’s Andres D’Alessandro and Huracan’s Hugo Barrientos for fighting in the 85th minute.

I suppose you can’t have coaches hurling objects into crowds at will. But you’d think they could at least get him one of those plexiglass riot shields all of the security guards are using.

  • Not unless he’s got a really really good arm.

  • Seems insane to just throw it randomly back into the crowd. It's not as if he's going to hit the individual fan that threw the pipe at him. Not unless he's got a really really good arm.
  • The irony is that Diaz said prior to the match that he hoped there would be no incidents of violence, as San Lorenzo and Huracan are big rivals. Apparently someone forgot to tell him that throwing objects to the opposing fans does kinda count.
