Seba Verón Takes a Voluntary Pay Cut

By: Daryl | August 11th, 2009

Juan Sebastián Verón recently matched his famous father’s feat of winning the Copa Libertadores with Estudiantes. But if there were any doubts about Seba being an Estudiantes legend, he sealed the deal this week by taking a voluntary 40% pay cut to help the club out financially.

It’s no secret that Argentinean football is struggling for pesos right now, with the start of the season officially suspended until the financial problems are sorted out.

“I think it’s the right gesture at a difficult time. The money can go towards the kids, who are the ones that keep the club going,” he said.

“The moment has come to roll up one’s sleeves and work for the rest, especially those of us who had the chance to forge careers in Europe.”

Big selfless gesture from Verón, and maximum respect to the man. But according to my calculations this means Verón loves his club 60% less than Joseba Etxeberria, who’s playing his final season at Athletic Bilbao for free.

RIQUELME!!! I don't buy it...he is the complete opposite of Veron

Didn't I read somewhere recently that Juan Roman Riquelme had also volunteered to play for free?
  • This is so much more human than those players who do the complete opposite - make a move to a strange, obscure place just for one last big paycheck (or, just for the sake of getting more dough in the middle of your career - see Adam Griffiths to Saudi Arabia).
  • Classy move by Veron.
