The First Ever Game On Easter Island

By: chris | August 6th, 2009

If we were to rank games on a “coolness scale”, this would be right at the top. Chilean big boys Colo Colo flew miles and miles over the ocean to take on locals Rapa-Nui in…the title of this post. Well, technically. This is the first “official” game, as part of the Chilean Cup – with first timers apparently given initiation by fire.

As you might expect, the locals of Easter Island aren’t very good, hence the 4-0 loss – one which surely would’ve been more were the islanders to travel to the mainland rather than the other way ’round. But from this historic game we discover football needs two things:

i. Fewer 2200 mile over-ocean commutes.
ii. More tribal dances to kick off the games.

Oceania gets 1/2 a WC spot, playing off with the 5th place Asian team. I think it's safe to say, now that Australia is in Asia and not Oceania, that New Zealand will be the play-off team for quite some time.

Kinda like football's version of the All Blacks routine?
@Oli - I get what you're saying, but I'm not even sure Easter Island has a national team. If they do, they probably wouldn't get to qualify for the WC because they're part of Chile, kinda like Guadeloupe is part of France. Plus, New Zealand rules Oceania now because Australia moved to the Asian Confederation.

Ociana gets a WC qualifing group, so they clearly have teams. These islands never qualify, Australia always does.

I think these Pacific Islands should form a break off league (still under fifa).

Just like a club league, so these islands get a chance of some games.
