This is Why Footballers Aren’t Boxers

By: Daryl | November 24th, 2008

There’s been a disturbing amount of YouTube video violence coming out of South America recently. Just last week we showed you the Danubio vs Nacional fisticuffs that led to the indefinite suspension of the Uruguayan Primera División.

So when I heard about a big old brawl in the Corinthians vs Avai Brazil Serie B game, I pretty much shrugged my shoulders. But this one’s worth sharing, mostly for the ineptness of the actual fighting.

Now, I’m in no position to be criticizing anyone’s punching skills. The only thing I’ve ever punched out is a timecard. But take a look at the close-up replay of the actual fighting here, about 1:30 into the video.

In the blue corner we have Marquinhos of Avai. In the white corner we have Morais of Corinthians. And despite being right up in each other’s faces neither man manages to swing a proper punch, choosing instead to grip each other’s collars very tightly and then wave their hands around in each other’s faces.

Not that I want to see footballers knocking each other senseless. But if they’re going to fight, they should at least do it properly.

Four men were sent off following the brawl – Marquinhos, Morais, Batista and Elias all hit the showers – leaving us to a game of nine vs nine that finished 3-2 to Corinthians.

Good news for rematch fans: both teams are already promoted and will meet again in Serie A next season.

LOL@1:40. How many times do you have to try before you hit a guy square in the face as opposed to tickling his ear?

I like these because there is inevitably some 40+ year old memebr of the training staff getting held back by a player, neither of which were involved in the “fighting” at all.

Ah why did they stop the fight? Those kids could fight all day long and they’d never hurt a fly.

Morais is a legend! If you watch his right fist closely before he throws his first “punch” at 1:38, it actually gyrates as if it were somehow building up the fury it would ultimately unleash, only to produce the best air shot I’ve ever seen! You couldn’t even script that!

Also, from 0:27 onwards watch the stray Corinthian venture onto the other half of the pitch: some Avai sub has been watching too many Kung Fu films (before gracefully hopping a 30 yard retreat).

Wow what a kick. It looked really powerful but it didn’t seem to do any serious damage. This whole fight is all flash and no substance.

I think the guy on the receiving end of the kick barely noticed it.
