Two Yellow Cards Means You’re… Free to Play On?

Brazilian referees don’t just get naked, they also make huge mistakes. Like Jose Henrique de Carvalho did this past weekend in the Corinthians vs Guaratinguetá Campeonato Paulista game. De Carvalho dished out two yellows to Guaratinguetá midfielder Magal… but forgot to send him off. You can see the two bookings in the video above at the 00:45 and 1:10 marks.

You can also see that Magal’s reaction to the second card is initially like a man who’s being sent off – shoulders slumped, etc – but when the midfielder clocks what’s happening he wisely backs away before de Carvalho realizes his mistake. The ref also sent off a Corinthians player, so he’s probably not that particular club’s favourite man in the middle right now. After the game he was quick to beg for forgiveness.

“I realised I had made a mistake at halftime,” he told the Sportv cable television channel. “I wrote down the number five instead of number eight, I made a mistake and I’m unhappy. I apologise to Corinthians and to their fans.”

Luckily for de Carvalho, Corinthians had too much for Guaratinguetá and won 2-0 anyway with a brace from the brilliantly named teenager Dentinho (nice diving header for the first goal by the way.) And though this looks bad for de Carvalho, at least he’s still a whole yellow card better than Graham Poll.
