When Goalkeeper Ball-Juggling Goes Bad

By: Daryl | May 16th, 2008

Agustin Orion tried to get fancy last night. And it did not go well. The San Lorenzo keeper can probably do hundreds of keepy-uppies in his garden at home, but in the Copa Libertadores quarterfinal first leg he did exactly two before losing control and allowing Claudio Bieler to score for Ecuadorian champs LDU Quito. Not a good week for goalkeepers.

Luckily for Orion, Adrian Gonzalez scored a beauty of a free kick to equalize, but LDU leave San Lorenzo with a vital away goal. I wouldn’t want to be where Orion’s standing if all San Lorenzo’s hard work from the last round (came from two goals down with nine men to knock out River Plate) is undone by his clown keeping.

In last night’s other quarterfinal, Mexican side America continued their remarkable turnaround. Not so long ago they were coachless, bottom of the Clausura and trailing Flamengo 4-2 going into their round of sixteen second leg. But after a 3-0 win against Flamengo, America marched on and last night upset some more Brazilian opposition with a 2-0 win over Santos at the Azteca, below:

Boca Juniors 2-2 Atlas (played at Vélez Sarsfield’s stadium due to Boca’s home ban)
São Paulo 1-0 Fluminese (with a goal from Adriano)
