By: Daryl | Comments 9 Comments

Major League Soccer announced the league’s Best XI yesterday, as voted for by media, players, coaches and GMs. Here’s what they came up with:
GOALKEEPER (1): Zach Thornton (Chivas USA)
DEFENDERS (3): Geoff Cameron (Houston Dynamo), Wilman Conde (Chicago Fire), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew)
MIDFIELDERS (5): Dwayne De Rosario (Toronto FC), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), [...]

The Appeal of Hating a Great Footballer

By: Rob | Comments 9 Comments

Albert Camus, the philosopher, author and football fanatic, was once asked that if he had to choose between football and the theatre, which he would choose. He replied “Football, without hesitation.”
And it’s little surprise, football has everything theatre has, and more. It has a story, but is unwritten. It has all the characters, the protagonists, [...]

The Offside 100: 2000-09

By: Rob | Comments 59 Comments

As I let you know back when I posted up this year’s FFT100, I’m a bit of a junkie for lists. They are utterly meaningless, and yet compelling at the same time.
With it being the end of the decade, there are tonnes of lists of the best albums, films, videos, celebrities etc floating around. [...]

The FFT100 – Agree? Disagree?

By: Rob | Comments 50 Comments

Esteemed Football magazine FourFourTwo has released its latest issue, for me the most exciting one of the year, the one that contains the countdown of the 100 Best Players in The World, according to them.
This is the third year that they’ve run the list, Kaká and C-Ron being the previous winners. Below I’ve give [...]

Soundoff: Which Current (or Recently Retired) Footballers are Future Legends?

By: Daryl | Comments 53 Comments

This is a tough question, and it requires a few generalizations. But here we go:
There is a top tier of soccer players. No one’s 100% sure exactly who’s in there or where the cutoff is. But it features the likes of Pelé, Diego Maradona, Johann Cruyff, George Best, Ferenc Puskás, Eusébio, Garrincha (pictured), Alfredo di [...]

Anything You Can Do…

By: Rob | Comments 3 Comments

Alot has been made of Barcelona and Real Madrid’s rivalry this season, rightly so, as the starting XI’s are surely the best two starting XI’s in the world. And after Barcelona stuck 5 past Atlético Madrid yesterday, we all might have wondered how Real would react.
Well, by putting 5 past [...]

Offside Soundoff: Who Is The Best Player who Retired Injured?

By: Rob | Comments 24 Comments

It was really nice, I thought, to see Tomas Rosicky score at the weekend. He’s been out of action for roughly 1000 years, and he came back and showed he’s still got the magic, by banging one in (in vein) against Manchester City.
Luckily, Rosicky hasn’t joined the list of players who had to retire [...]

Soundoff: Who’s Your Favourite Number Nine?

By: Daryl | Comments 38 Comments

It’s the 9th of September, 2009. One of those rare days when both sides of the Atlantic can agree on how to write the date: 09/09/09. So what better day to celebrate the number nine jersey?
The meaning of shirt numbers varies from culture to culture, but #9 is pretty universal. In any language it means [...]

Should They Stay Or Should They Go?

By: Rob | Comments 23 Comments

So after all the hoo-ha about Eduardo’s stumble and fall, this weekend bought up a few more similar incidents (inevitably) that made me question the keeper’s role in all this. I mean, although Eduardo clearly dived, he wouldn’t have had the chance had Boruc stayed up on his feet, made himself big and stopped any [...]

Ronaldo Is Immune To Things Such As Surgery

By: chris | Comments 8 Comments

About a month back there were some rumors that Ronaldo, while already under the knife for a broken wrist, had some fat sucked out of this tummy in a surgical BOGO (no clue whether or not this was performed in the back of a van in the club parking lot). And with his return impending, [...]

Zlatan’s Move To Barca Was Always In The Cards

By: chris | Comments 10 Comments

Take a good look at this picture of Zlatan lounging about during his Malmo days, taken sometime ’round the turn of the millennium. In it you’ll notice a couple of things:
i. A desperate need for freshly elasticized sweat socks.
ii. Pictures of Ronaldo – three to be precise.
The key is not, in fact, in the sweat [...]
