Africa Cup of Nations Quarterfinals at World Cup Blog
By: Daryl | February 3rd, 2008
The Africa Cup of Nations group stages are well and truly behind us, and the real business of knockout tournament football starts today. And what a start. It’s Ghana vs Nigeria in the first game, arguably the fiercest, and best, rivalry in African football. Nigeria want revenge for the 4-1 friendly defeat in 2007, Ghana want revenge for the 1-0 defeat at Africa Cup of Nations 2006. Only one of them will get it.
You can expect a bruising, full-blooded encounter powered by mutual respect, but even more so by the desire to prove who’s best. There’s pride and West African bragging rights on the line in Accra today, but also a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.
The later quarterfinal sees Group A runners up Guinea take on Cote d’Ivoire. Guinea are missing captain Pascal Feindouno through suspension, while Cote d’Ivoire have Didier Drogba and friends to call on. We all know who the favourite is, but anything can happen now it’s win or go home.
We’re getting all excited about the quarterfinals as part of our Africa Cup of Nations coverage on World Cup Blog, so head over there for full previews and LiveBlogs of today’s games:
