The Africa Cup of Nations Situation - Group D

By: Daryl | January 31st, 2008

El-Hadji Diouf SenegalGroup C was nice and straightforward yesterday: Egypt won and Cameroon won, so Egypt and Cameroon went through. Group D could also be nice and simple today. If Angola and Tunisia play out a draw then they both go to the quarterfinals and that’s that. However, if that game produces a winner (and more importantly a loser) then that opens the quarterfinal door to either Senegal or South Africa, who play in today’s other Group D game. Keep reading for a look at the Group D table and an overview of who needs to do what today to keep the dream alive.

Team Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
Tunisia 2 1 1 0 5 3 +2 4
Angola 2 1 1 0 4 2 +2 4
Senegal 2 0 1 1 3 5 -2 1
South Africa 2 0 1 1 2 4 -2 1

Today’s games:

Angola vs Tunisia, 1700 GMT, Tamale
Senegal vs South Africa, 1700 GMT, Kumasi

Who needs what:

If Tunisia win or draw they top the group and go through. If Tunisia lose to Angola, and Senegal win, and Senegal make up the goal difference, then Tunisia are out.

Angola top the group by winning today, or take second place with a draw. If Angola lose and South Africa win, and South Africa make up the goal difference, then Tunisia are out.

Senegal need to beat South Africa and hope Tunisia lose to Angola. They then need to finish with a better goal difference than Tunisia.

South Africa need to beat Senegal and hope Angola lose to Tunisia. They then need to finish with a better goal difference than Angola.

Anyone notice Sudan’s kits in the match yesterday with Cameroon? Diadora, which differed slightly from the ADIDAS kits they wore in the first two matches. C’mon, how can you be taken seriously when you change kit manufacturers mid-tourney. 5 bucks to the person who can name the last nation to do the switcharoo mid tourney at a major event (Euro, WC, CopaAmerica, etc)…….
