The Offside Podcast, Episode 6

The podcast is back, the podcast is back!

Returning to us after a long, holiday break are podcast regulars Ian Rose and Anne Ramzy, as well as their new partner-in-pod, Daryl Grove. Among other things, the three of them discuss the excitement over the upcoming African Cup of Nations, are unfairly cruel to Brazilian goalkeepers (This, apparently, is what Dida has wrought.), wonder at the allure of the Newcastle hotseat, and touch a bit on the madness of the transfer season (Who doesn’t love to talk about Robbie Savage?). If you’ve got a few minutes free during lunch, have a listen.

  Martha, I’d love to have a discussion about it on the show. I don’t mean to be too negative on them – my main point was that the brilliance of Brazilian players at the outfield positions seems a little less at the keeper position. It may very well come down to my relative ignorance of the domestic Brazilian game, or to the superstardom of some Brazilian outfield players. And yeah, mostly I think we were kidding around a bit about Dida, who I’m not fond of. To me, Brazil is still the ultimate producer of world soccer talent worldwide, bar none, but if anyone wants to specifically stand up for Brazilian keepers, come on the show.

  No worries, Ian! Also with Dida, the Brazilian 1 and 2 (Julio Cesar and Doni) both play in Italy, so my perception of the quality of Brazilian keepers is probably really slanted (or maybe accurate, I’m not sure which).

  Doni might not be the best argument in favour of goalkeeping brilliance… Not many goalkeepers concede 7 goals in one game, and even fewer do it in the quarter-finals of the Champions League…

  Ian, there are two SPL players in the tournament. Laryea Kingston of Hearts will be representing Ghana. Does this mean you’ll have divided loyalties between Ghana and Guinea?
