BATE and Cluj Show No Fear in the Champions League

By: Daryl | October 1st, 2008

There’s no getting away from the fact that some team names are a little less familiar than others in the Champions League this season. But if we were expecting the likes of Romania’s CFR Cluj and Belarus’s FC BATE Borisov to roll out the welcome mat and let the more famous teams trample all over them, we can think again.

On matchday one, there was Cluj’s famous 2-1 win over Roma to mark their Champions League debut. And yesterday BATE were expected to lose at home to Juventus, but raced into a two goal lead instead.

Juve came back and eventually equalized with two goals from Vincenzo Iaquinta, but BATE and Cluj have now sent a message: the Champions League isn’t just for the big boys. We’ll see if Cluj can continue their great start when Chelsea visit today.
