Bojan’s First Champions League Goal Makes Me Feel Old

By: Daryl | April 2nd, 2008

Lots of attention on the Roma vs Man Utd game yesterday, and on Cristiano Ronaldo’s flying header. But over in Gelsenkirchen, a young Spaniard was scoring his first Champions League goal, and probably not his last. When Henry’s shot came back to his feet via the keeper in 12th minute, the man with the va-va-voom looked up and saw 17-year-old Bojan Krkić arriving at the far post. Henry squared it and Bojan was able to lift it into the roof of the net.

Schalke had started the game with three strikers – Gerald Asamoah, Halil Altintop and Kevin Kuranyi – in an attacking lineup, hoping to capitalize on Barca’s perceived defensive frailties. And they had their chances to equalize, with Altintop twice going very very close and Marcelo Bordon heading over the bar close to full time.

But Bojan’s goal was not only the winner, and a valuable away goal, it makes him the second youngest player to ever score in the Champions League (Peter Ofori-Quaye is still the youngest) and – I think – the first ever CL scorer born in the 1990s.
