Champions League Matchday 3
By: Bob | October 18th, 2006
It has become an annual tradition for Chelsea and Barcelona to meet in the Champions League. The two sides have been in the same group for three straight years now and today they squared off at Stamford Bridge. It was a beautiful goal by Didier Drogba that turned out to be the difference as Chelsea moved five points clear of the defending Champions League winners in Group A. Our man Andy at the newly opened Chelsea Offside blog will surely have some warm words to say about Drogba, as well as the play of third-string keeper Hilario. A shutout against one of the world’s top teams is not a bad way to make a debut.
The day also saw Bayern Munich and Valencia pick up their third straight Champions League wins, while Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven are both breathing with room atop the Group C table.
Complete results below from the Champions League week below. The fun resumes again with matchday 4 on October 31 and November 1. Your thoughts on the competition thus far are welcomed.

Great goal from Drogba but I can’t believe how poorly Barcelona played in that game. Their passing was terrible. Disappointing to see such a poor effort in such a big game.

Great win for Chelsea. And all the British teams, really. Except for, um, one of them.

Bayern has looked very tough in their CL matches. I only wish they would show the same effort in league games. No real surprises today. The big teams are going to advance this year and the later rounds are going to be awesome.
