Drogs & The Unibrow Sent To The Champions League Corner
By: chris | June 17th, 2009Everybody knew the Chelsea choir was in trouble, but UEFA came down harsher than some may have expected for bringing the integrity of Europe’s acronym into question. Drogba’s antics are well-documented/remixed and you may remember Jose “My Wages Aren’t Enough For A Uni-wax” Bosingwa’s little post-controversy accusation…
“I don’t know if he’s a referee or a thief. I don’t have any words to describe that man that was on the pitch. We have nothing against Barcelona’s goal but the penalties that he didn’t give us and his way of managing the game weren’t right at all. This referee should never referee a game again. What happened was a disgrace. It was a well contested game but the referee came to spoil our game.”
So clearly they were in for some sort of reprimand, possibly a three game suspension or so. But UEFA dropped the hammer – putting the kibosh on future incidents and all – and suspended Drogba for 6 games, 2 of which are suspended during a two year probationary period (which essentially means it’s 4 games if Didier is on his bestest behavior for the next couple years), and Bosingwa for 4 games, 2 of which are suspended for the same two year period. So it could be as little as four for Drogba and two for Bosingwa.
And unfortunately for Chelsea, they were half-decent last year, which means they don’t get to waste those suspensions on qualifying formalities. Straight into the groups they go, which means Didier will miss the bulk of the action and Bosingwa will miss the opening duo. Or maybe even as much as the entire group phase for Drogba, which would mean Chelsea fans will be relying on Anelka. And then crying.
Not that this should matter, of course, with The Champions League Messiah now leading the charge in London.
Now it’s your call: fair or foul? Too much? Too little? Just right?

Seems about fair to me. At least 4 days and an incentive to play nice for two years.

Agree that Mr. Bollocks deserves something. He looked possessed during his tirade. Are any sanctions even being considered for him?

absurd penalty. wtf is wrong with uefa when they are suspending players for reacting to gross injustice on the field yet they don’t blink an eye at real’s ridiculous spending or barca’s links to the genocidal regime in charge of uzbekistan. it reminds me of cops pointing to a decrease in jaywalking while ignoring a skyrocketing murder rate.

I believe Ballack wasn’t penalized because his outbursts came during the game, where the referee chose how to act on it. Drogba’s outbursts (and Bosingwa’s comments) came after the game, flips flops and all, where the referee no longer had “jurisdiction.”

Peep my post on the subject to see the kind of inconsistency UEFA is prone to.

What’s inconsistent about this? They did something wrong, they’re punished, seems pretty standard. If this was a player in the NFL he’d be banned for a season and perhaps fined hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not to mention he’d get bitch-slapped by Oprah.

Penalty should have been harsher. I bet Abromobich bribed the UEFA officials!
