Inter Milan vs Liverpool, the Only Game in Town

Rafa smilingBig Champions League game tonight between Inter and Liverpool at the San Siro. And one of a kind too, as it falls outside the usual military precision matchday schedule where all the games kick off simultaneously. If you’re wondering why, look no further than last week’s AC Milan vs Arsenal game, also at the San Siro.

Can you imagine the city of Milan if Arsenal, AC Milan, Liverpool and Inter fans all descended for two games in two days? Not that there necessarily would have been trouble, but that’s a lot of football fans (and a lot of wear and tear on the San Siro grass.)

And so we have this one-off game and I have to say that as a neutral [cue McDonald's music] I’m loving it.

Because Champions League matchdays tend to be a bit overwhelming. Some of the finest club teams in the world are competing, but they’re all competing at the same time. So how do you choose what to watch? If you’re lucky enough to support a Champions League qualified team, then it’s easy. You watch your team.

But if not? It’s torture. How did you decide between Milan vs Arsenal and Man Utd vs Lyon last week? Whichever one you chose you felt like you were missing out, which sort of ruins the experience.

But not today. Today we can all focus on Inter vs Liverpool and not worry about what else is going on. We don’t have to agonize over which game to watch, because there’s literally only one game in town. Liverpool are 2-0 up from the first leg, but missing Xabi Alosno in semi-controversial circumstances, while Inter will be without the suspended Materazzi and the injured Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba. They do have Zlatan Ibrahimovic though.
