Obligatory Man Utd vs Bayern Munich 1999 Champions League Final Post

By: Daryl | March 30th, 2010

Part of me didn’t want to post this, because I know the 1999 Champions League final at the Camp Nou is the easy and obvious reference that everyone has been making in advance of today’s Bayern vs Man Utd preview. But then I actually watched the video, and remembered just how incredible it was.

Mario Basler had given Bayern the lead with an excellent low free kick in the 6th minute, and the game went all the way to injury time with the score Bayern 1-0 Man Utd. In the 91st minute, Man Utd sent keeper Peter Schmeichel forward for a corner – they were that desperate. The corner was cleared, but Ryan Giggs shot at goal and substitute Teddy Sherringham deflected the ball past Oliver Kahn to equalize. Two minutes later Beckham took a corner, Sherringham flicked it on and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer headed in at the far post to give Man Utd a win that had looked out of their reach less than three minutes earlier.

Today’s game can’t possibly be as dramatic, but I do like the fact that certain Champions League encounters have this sort of history behind them.

  • In my defence, that Man Utd comeback in 1999 was dramatic and a memorable moment for all football neutrals. Myself included.

Bayern's 3-1 win over two legs in 2001 wasn't. It was certainly impressive, but in terms of famous footballing moments it's not even close to the 1999 final. Which is why I posted the above video.
