Offside SoundOff: Tell Us About Your 2008 UEFA Team
By: Laurie | December 11th, 2008
This is a three-step process. 1) Go to the UEFA site and vote for your team of 2008. 2) Come back here and read the post. 3) Tell us about some or all of the players you picked, and why, in the comments.
Got it? Great. Now go to the UEFA site. We’ll wait.
Chris was going to write this post, but he’s boycotting this contest because there are no Roma players up for anything. I see his point, (and am equally offended that there is only one Ligue 1 player) but I’ve noticed that in years when there is a major competition involving European teams (i.e. World Cup or Euros), the nominations tend to be heavy on the teams that did well, especially the underdogs. That’s why I could pick almost an entire starting eleven of French players in 2006, and also the reason we’re seeing a lot of Turkish and Russian players this year.
So which players are up for the UEFA Team? (And I’m not feeling like Wiki-ing every single player, so I’m basically going by memory on club affiliation — with occasional Skype question to Chris on the Russians — and I haven’t had any caffeine yet. So if I were to accidentally say, “Franck Ribéry, Marseille”? Bayern Munich fans, please be gentle.)
Starting at the back, we have:
Goalkeeper:
Edwin Van der Sar (Manchester United, Netherlands); Iker Casillas (Real Madrid, Spain); Petr Cech (Chelsea, Czech Republic); Rene Adler (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany); Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moskow, Russia)
I had to go with Iker – based entirely on Euros, since I don’t watch a lot of La Liga games. But he was stellar in Euros.
Rightback:
Jose Bosingwa (Chelsea, Portugal); Aleksandr Anyukov (Zenit St. Petersburg, Russia); Bacary Sagna (Arsenal, France); Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid, Spain); Maicon (Inter, Brazil)
The Equipe de France-loving part of me says Sagna, but I had to go with Bosingwa. I love the creativity he’s brought to Chelsea this year — a team that was so boring last year I think it occasionally made my eyeballs bleed. (What’s that you say? Results? Pfft.)
Central Defender (pick two):
Jamie Carragher (Liverpool, England); Tomas Ujfalusi (Atletico Madrid, Czech Republic); Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United, England); Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea, Portugal); Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United, Serbia); Carles Puyol, (Barcelona, Spain); John Terry (Chelsea, England); Carlos Marchena (Valencia, Spain); Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus, Italy); Pepe (Real Madrid, Portugal)
Carles Puyol was a no-brainer for me. I just love the guy. Picking a second was harder, but I ended up going with Rio Ferdinand.
Leftback:
Joan Capdevila (Villareal, Spain); Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich, Germany); Patrice Evra (Manchester United, France); Yuri Zhirkov (CSKA Moskow, Russia); Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord, Netherlands)
One of those happy times where head and heart agree. Patrice Evra all the way. (And oh dear lord, does that mean I’ve just picked two ManU players?)
Right Midfield
Javier Zanetti (Inter, Italy); Steven Gerrard (Liverpool, England); Hamit Altintop, (Bayern Munich, Turkey); Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, Portugal); Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich, Germany)
I went with Hamit Altintop based on his Euro performance, and because I wanted to include at least one Turk in my selection because the team was so exciting to watch in SwissAustria this summer.
Central Midfield
Anatoliy Tymoshchuk (Zenit, Russia); Xavi Hernandez (Barcelona, Spain); Konstantin Zyryanov (Zenit, Russia); Marcos Senna (Villareal, Spain); Mehmet Aurelio (Real Betis, Turkey)
Marcos Senna, also due to his Euro performance. (But I really thought Jeremy Toulalan from Lyon should have been on the list.)
Attacking Midfield
Frank Lampard (Chelsea, England); Michael Ballack (Chelsea, Germany); Andrei Arshavin, (Zenit, Russia); Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal, Spain); Luca Modric (Tottenham, Croatia)
I struggled between Arshavin and Fabregas, but in the end went with Arshavin because I thought he performed better in Euros, and Zenit won the UEFA Cup. And because I needed a token Russian.
Left Midfield
Wesley Sneijder (Real Madrid, Netherlands); Arjen Robben (Real Madrid, Netherlands); Andres Iniesta (Barcelona, Spain); David Silva (Valencia, Spain); Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich, France)
Another place where heart and head are one. 100% Ribery!
Forward (pick two)
Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus, Italy); Fernando Torres (Liverpool, Spain); Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter, Sweden); Wayne Rooney (Manchester United, England); David Villa (Valencia, Spain); Karim Benzema (Lyon, France); Lionel Messi (Barcelona, Argentina); Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid, Argentina); Daniel Guiza (Fenerbahce, Spain); Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal, Togo)
Zlatan and Karim. Just because.

Coach
Temuri Ketsbaia (Anorthosis); Fatih Terim (Turkey); Dick Advocaat (FC Zenit); Luis Aragones (Spain through Euro 2008, now Fenerbahce); Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United)
Um…what? All individually merited, of course, but does this list seem to anybody else to be stacked with lesser-known coaches (and at least one known racist) to ensure that the award goes to Sir Alex? Or is it just me?
I voted for Terim, because Turkey were fun to watch in Euros. And because of this photo — which for some reason amuses me no end. (Chris says, “He’s probably on the phone ordering a hit.”)
And now it’s your turn. Who did you vote for and why? And who wasn’t on UEFA’s list that you think should have been?

I’m also boycotting. Leaving out DDR is just anti Italian bigotry.

Usually with these team of the year things I just choose any player that plays on a Serie A team because I’m biased. So I had to pick Chiellini, Maicon, Zanetti, Del Piero, and Ibrahimovic.
But out of my biased picks, Maicon deserves to be the right back, he’s the best in the world right now.

No gigi?!
I said this: Casillas; Maicon, Chiellini, Ferdinand, Capdevilla; CR7, Xavi, Fabregas, Ribery; ADP, Ibra

Akinfeev
Bosingwa
Chiellini and Terry
Lahm
Schwienstieger
Zyryanov
Ballack
Ribery
Del Piero (Captain) and Aguero
TerimThis wasnt very good, no buffon (he made the only saved pk in euros leads juve to 2nd in serie a and back in champs league)and many others who also deserved the cut. Schwienstieger barely won out over altintop, ribery only won b/c the two dutch guys roasted italy with sneijder scoring and getting man of the match which ruled them out and same for senna from spain, would rather die than ever vote for cron for anything other than “biggest twit of 2008″, and the rest are pretty self-explanatory, plus id like to see anyone score agaisnt a backline w/ terry and chiellini in it. and DP rocks and would never be anything less than captain

I see you’ve gone mostly on Euro 2008, as that competition didn’t actually happen I can’t really count that as a yard stick for football…I jest. I’ll be honest though, my footballing brain has already forgotten about Euro 08…it seems like years ago.
So, I’ve gone for players based on Champions League 08…which was actually longer ago. But, as I spent my first year in halls with the biggest Manchester United fan I’ll ever meet, I watched every Champions League game there was, as our local had a rather fun duel screen thing going on.
Anyway,
GK – Van Der Sar – Simply because this will probably be his last hurrah in the united goal….(or will it?)and to be between the sticks of a side that wins the double is good enough for me.
RB – Bosingwa – Pacey, beast of a shot, now at Chelsea, just a great player really.
LB – Evra – Really impressed me at times last season, he’s got a bit of flair too, and was a steady performer when he wasn’t having a tussle with the Chelsea ground staff.
CBs – Terry and Vidic – The two best cbs in the league, absolutely dominate the defence when they’re both on form. We all know Terry can do this, the suprise is Vidic, I remember his first game for Manchester, he looked like a lost boy on his first day at school, he’s adapted brilliantly
RM – C.Ronaldo, I don’t think many had a better individual years than him last year, as much as I dislike his lack of loyalty, showboating and general cockery, if someone asked if you’d have him in the team it’s a no brainer…quite why Gerrard is in this catagory is a mystery…I’d have had him centre mid
CM – so I’ve had to go for Xavi instead.
LM – Ribery for me, until he did himself in he was getting a good thing going, he’s a player I’d love to see more of, so I’m hoping Man City bid 45 million for him or something equally retarded over the january transfer window.
AM – Fabregas, despite Aragones still thinking he’s shit, I think he’s quite good. He’s worth putting in the team for moments of the sublime.
FW – Messi – I love watching this man with the ball at his feet, he gets me all hot under the collar.
FW – Ibrahimovic – despite his showboatingshowoffery he’s actually got the talent behind it, if he could sort out his attitude then he’d be a bezzle, as it is he’ll have to make do with being exceptional. I’m constantly amazed he’s Swedish.
Manager – Fergie, he’d work well with the team cause there are a few familiar faces in there, and he’d also give Zlatan a few hair dryers.
Awesome way to spend a morning coffee this.

Van Der Sar : CL winner, EPL winner with a ridiculously goal-tight defence, and was decent in the Euro. I’d have gone for Casillas because of the EURO, but looking back at the Liga and CL I chose VDS (22 goals conceded in EPL vs 36 in La Liga, 6 goals conceded in the CL vs 13).
Ramos : Won the Euros with Spain, the Liga with Madrid… One of Madrid’s best players IMO, and very possibly the best right-back in the world for the past two or three seasons already.
Vidic : With Ferdinand they were just the best defensive pairing in Europe, IMO. Serbia and England didn’t make the EURO, but the defensive strength Man U won the double on was 90% due to them. Puyol had a great Euro, but with Barca finishing 3rd (and conceding 43 goals) I felt it hard to keep him in there.
Ferdinand (c) : See Vidic.
Evra : Again, Man U’s CL and Premier League double where he was good offensively and defensively made the choice.
Ronaldo : Free-scoring for Man U, and gave created 6 of Portugal’s 7 goals in the EURO… As unlikeable as he is, he was the best winger this season (especially since Messi wasn’t in competition, strangely enough)
Fabregas : Didn’t get much playing time for Spain in the EURO, but was impressive for Arsenal all season. Arshavin I’m surprised people aren’t picking up on his disastrous Russian League campaign… 5th? Sevilla finished 4th in the Liga and won the UEFA Cup for a second time in a row not too long ago (and I’m pretty sure they had at least one player that had a good WC 2006), and nobody was hailing Kanoute, Navas, Capel or Luis Fabiano as a potential Ballon D’Or winner.
Xavi : Fantastic this season, brilliant Euro, and all-round good playing. Tremendous player.
Iniesta : See Xavi. Together they can run any midfield ragged.
Messi : I’d have preferred him at right wing and Ronaldo on the left, but if he’s a striker I’m fine with it.
Torres : I think he’s the goalscorer that had the best season, even though Villa, Guiza and Ibrahimovic also have strong arguments to be made.
Fergusson : Winning the European double? The only thing that comes close is winning the EURO, but Aragones (also a horrible person, but that’s not the question) managed to fluff his rep at Fenerbahce by fluffing out of the CL.Posted from

Casillas
Bosingwa
Vidic
Puyol
Zhirkov
C.Ronaldo
Senna
Fabregas
Iniesta
Ibrahimowic
VillaCassillas must be on my team, although I can`t understand why Buffon isn`t an option. From the right back Bosingwa looks really good for Chelsea and he was one of the best players for Portugal in Euro. I had to pick Puyol both for Spain and Barcelona performances, then I had to choose between Ferdinand and Vidic and decided to gho with the Serb. They are of similar quality to me but I just like him more:) Zhirkov was a 100% as he was simply amazing on Euro plus he plays well for CSKA. Ronaldo has no competition on right flank, in the centre it was tough to choose between Senna and Xavi, eventually Senna gest my vote for his Euro performance. On the left flank I went for Iniesta – one of the most versatile players in Europe at the moment

Aahh gee, why Van Bronckhorst. Ok he played good at EURO 2008, but in the dutch competition, he sure isn’t the best player

Netherlands

How have so many people picked Van der Sar? He’s been a joke this season, looked far too old, and just because the Netherlands don’t have any other goalies doesn’t mean he’s good enough for them…

Iker
Sergio Ramos
John Terry
Giovanni van Bronckhorst
Cristiano Ronaldo
Xavi Hernandez
Andrei Arshavin
Franck Ribery
Fernando Torres
Lionel Messi
Luis Aragones (because leading the Spanish team to win the EURO 2008 and his public appearances
