See the guy on the ground? That’s Liverpool’s John Arne Riise.

The look on his face? This is the look you get when, in the ninety-fifth minute, your team has a 1-0 lead at home, and then you go to head the ball away in the waning seconds, but instead end up sending it directly past your goalkeeper and into the goal.

Chelsea now goes into the home leg with an all-important away goal advantage.

I don’t think this is a happy look.

This question has been raised elsewhere, “Why not kick it?” The ball was coming off of a pretty low bounce, and Riise made a decision to head instead of kick it. Was he thinking it’d be safer to knock it out with his head? Whatever it was, it didn’t work very well for him.

soze: because sami hyypia’s middle name is own goal. chelsea might have won that game if hyypia was in because he puts so many goals in his own net. he’s awful.

Well, considering they shouldn’t have been there in the first place…

Not that I’m incredibly, incredibly biased and blinkered or anything. ;)

Does anyone know why Anelka is getting so little playing time?

Jean-Michel, it’s because Chelsea is wedded to 4-3-3 this season and Drogba is the designated striker. They’ve tried Anelka as a winger and it hasn’t worked out well. From what I’ve read, Chelseea has promised to switch to 4-4-2 next year to utilize two strikers on the field at once.

Of course, rumors that Drogba is leaving this summer are also rampant, so let’s cross our fingers that Anelka will be either one of two or THE striker next year.

Thanks for the update Laurie. I figured as much but definitely wanted to rule out injury this close to the Euro.

Lee, wery right. “why not kick it??” by heading the ball so low, even if he did manage to get it going the other way, Riise has just put himself out of the game. A defender on the ground right in front of his own net???? wow!! now that’s good decision making *rolls eyes*

Finnegan seems to have a high regard for Liverpool defenders..maybe Rafa should take up the back line…whattayouthink?

Chelsea aren’t switching to a 4-4-2 next year, there’d be no place for Ricardo Quaresma! ;-)

All I know about Chelseea is what I read in the Anelka news, and he told a paper recently that they’ve promised him a switch to 4-4-2.

I couldn’t give two shits about Chelsea or Liverpool, and I think the Champions League is a joke and is ruining the competitiveness of the sport… but hot diggity damn, I am definitely now a fan of Riise. Brilliant finish. The dude has actually restored some interest in this tournament for me.
