Real Madrid Wakes Up from Champions League Siesta
By: Bob | September 26th, 2006
It is pretty easy to beat up on Real Madrid. With a hodgepodge of stars with somewhat unappealing personalities from all around the world, the expectations are that they should always win and when they don’t they receive their share of criticism. All of this is valid as long as people also recognize their successes, like today’s 5-1 ass whipping on Dynamo Kiev in Champions League match play.
The lads from Ukraine are not exactly world beaters having yielded nine goals in two Champions League matches, but Real Madrid is quite renowned for playing down to their opponents. That wasn’t the case today. The Galaticos took control early and showed their quality. Raul was brought out of the closet, dusted off and thrown onto the pitch to score two goals, bringing his total to 53 in the Champions League. Ruud van Nistleroy also scored a brace after staying up all last night while his wife was delivering a child that hopefully looks more like her than him.
Said his coach after the match: “He didn’t sleep last night and had only a short siesta this afternoon but he was certainly wide awake for this game.”
Whether this win will awaken the rest of Real Madrid’s squad remains to be seen, but if you are fan of the Galaticos it is certainly a step in the right direction. Their Champions League group is tricky but not especially tough and with a few more well-timed siestas we suspect they’ll move on to the next round.
Here’s a handy recap on all the day’s Champions League action and you can check here to see video all the goals once they are posted online.
