Taking One For The Team Doesn’t Reap What It Used To

By: chris | July 29th, 2009

For those who don’t enjoy the sight of a helpless body unconscious on the ground, please avert your eyes and move along.

The big story here was that of Felipe Felix, who was kicked well into obliviousness during yesterday’s Champions League match between Levski Sofia of Bulgaria and Azerbaijan’s Baku. The few news sources which happen to care enough about such a match to report the 0-0 mention nothing of Felix’s status, so we can only assume he’s at least not dead. So that’s good.

But here’s the strange thing: no foul, no penalty no card. Apparently a high boot to the face from behind as the last man in the box rendering your opponent unconscious is well within the written rules of football. Or maybe we suddenly have a new standard bearer for missed calls.

However, it seems as though Azerbaijani officials exacted their own revenge by grounding Levski at the airport for the night. Well done.
