Top 10 Goals of The Champions League Group Stage
By: chris | December 19th, 2007
The goals, as selected by UEFA, which gave the most spine tingling sensations throughout the group stages during the fall. I was going to poke fun at UEFA for listing them in chronological order instead of showing a little bit of gusto and actually ranking them 1 thru 10, but honestly, I struggled to pick my top 1, nevermind 1-10. For me, there were no jawdroppers on this list, a la Mancini versus Lyon or Crouchie’s bike from last year, but certainly some great goals. And UEFA sure likes their missiles towards the upper 90. All 10 goals after the jump.
Top Ten
Andrea Pirlo v Benfica
The man is accuracy & precision personified. There are very few, if any, better dead ball strikers in the world, and he proves it time and time again.
Messi v Lyon
Twas more about the buildup than the actual goal by Messi, but forgive me for not doing cartwheels. Not exactly something new from Barca. (Which is good.)
Deivid v Internazionale
Volley full of power which spearheaded the Turkish surprise against Inter’s South American All-Stars.
Mathieu Valbuena v Liverpool
Perfect placement which no keeper in the world would/could have stopped.
Clarence Seedorf v Shakhtar Donetsk
Clarence proves that if you’re going to punch the ball out of the box against Milan, you’d damn well better punch it out of bounds or into the other half. (last goal)
Tarik Sektioui v Marseille
Tarik takes the ball from half, runs through the pasture in OM’s half and splits the Marseille defense before creating himself an open goal. Who needs assists?
Zlatan v CSKA Moskva
Give him space and he’ll beat you every time. Howitzer.
Cristiano Ronaldo v Sporting
Over the top goal followed by an over the top celebration.
Maxi Pereira v Milan
If not for the woodwork, this goal was going through the netting.
Alex v CSKA Moskva
More long range action into the top corner.
Alright, I’ll give mine:
1. Seedorf
2. Deivid
3. Pirlo
4. Sektioui
5. Valbuena
6. Pereira
7. Ronaldo
8. Alex
9. Messi
10. Zlatan
Surely some were missed, so if you think they belong, let’s hear it. (I nominate the gorgeous buildup to Roma’s first goal against Dynamo Kyiv on the 2nd Matchday. The Beautiful Game at its best.)
