Im not saying its Rooney's fault... His stats are better but he plays way more. Being willing to play other positions doesnt make you a better player... It shouldnt be a criteria really- Hell Im willing to play any position- doesnt make me any good... As for mentality- If its the 90th minute and you have been awarded a penalty and its 1-1 who do you choose to take it between the two? IMO its Tevez no doubt. Rooney is overratted by others, he is a good player, but Tevez is better... Maybe the problem here is that Tevez is a bit underrated...

"Rooney is only 23"

I don't know about you, but I stopped having stupid tantrums a lot younger than 23.

At what age should a football stop lashing out at opponents??

I'd be interested in seeing a similar composition of the tackles Aalborg made... Cuth made a delicious lunge at Tevez, and there were a few nice tackles at Nani too.

Rooney isn't a saint, but I don't think Aalborg are immaculate here either. Rooney could very well have received a "warm" reception by the Danish defence, and that sets the tone for the match. If you look at Portugal-Holland from the 2006 WC and focus on Deco, one could make the same argument. But his ban for two yellow cards (one match) wasn't extended by UEFA or FIFA for the simple reason that when Van Bommel, Bouhlarouz and Bronchorst are kicking people all over the pitch, tempers get flared up.

Should Rooney be banned? IMO, yes for two or three matches. But Cuth should also be suspended for at least one match for his lunge on Tevez. If you're going to look at the video to dish out post-match penalties (something I am in favor of) you've got to treat everybody fairly, and not only players who are known to have a short temper.

I would argue every one of those points except dribbling, and possibly Rooney's work rate (maybe). I think it's a case of Rooney being labeled as "overrated" globally because he's built up so much by the English media. That's hardly his fault. I think he's one of the top players in the game period because of the results that the team gets when he plays, his array of abilities and willingness to play anywhere as needed. I don't see how it is a negative that he can and will play on the wings (or anywhere else) if he has to. In addition, Rooney's statistics (Appearances, goals, assists, etc) are at worst comparable to Tevez AND, he's a year younger.

MoMONEY, I'm not sure Argentina fans would agree that Tevez has the better mentality. He's missed half of Argentina's World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign so far through suspensions.

You're right BPIL, Rooney has come a long way. A year ago he would have stomped on that guy 3 or 4 times at least.

Thats exactly what I am saying... Tevez> Rooney

Dribbling: Tevez
Shooting: Rooney (but Tevez is a better one touch finisher)
Mentality: Tevez (Rooney gets frustrated and hurts his team- red card in WC, this, diving...)
Work Rate/ Effort: Tevez- doubt anyone will argue this
Creating for Teammates: Tevez- Same thing
Strength: Rooney (but tevez can use his skill to hold up the ball for just as long)

Rooney is a really good player and I actually like him but he is not the player most people make him out to be... I honestly think without Tevez Man Utd wouldnt have won the champions league last year... Remember that Ferguson put him up fron and put Rooney on the wing- he knows that Tevez is the more effective striker but benching Rooney could be disastrous to the clubs morale, the fans opinions of ferguson, and even the country's hopes and dreams... Once again Rooney is not trash by any measure but he is not as good as most people think he is...

Rooney has come a long way in terms of maturity this season. Just look at 2008's preseason with all the speculation that Rooney didnt even want to play.

There are indeed times where he has a couple tantrums, but we can all admit that he's come a long way. Plus I'd like to add that he is still only 23 years of age; people forget this sometimes when they think of how long he's been around.
