Imagining a Proper 32 Team Club World Cup

By: Daryl | December 14th, 2009

club world cupThe Club World Cup is about to get interesting. I Promise. The two semi-finals happen over the next two days, with Estudiantes vs Pohang Steelers on Tuesday December 15th and Barcelona vs Atlante on Wednesday the 16th. But as Gabriele Marcotti quite rightly points out in this Times article, the tournament struggles to hold our interest. Mostly because it’s somewhat predictable (a six team competition with only two potential winners, either European or South American champion) and the location (so far: Asia and the Middle East) makes kickoff times unfriendly for European viewers.

Marcotti suggests a couple of simple solutions: 1. Add one extra European and one extra South American team = an 8 team tournament with 4 potential winners, and 2. Change the location. Hard to disagree, as both moves would definitely improve the tournament’s profile. But these are small, sensible steps. It’s much mjuch more fun to let your imagination run wild.

In an ideal world, we’d have a Club World Cup that works in the same way as the actual World Cup. A full compliment of 32 club teams from around the world playing in a month long tournament over the summer.

Stop and imagine that for a second.

One host nation. All the big European and South American teams mixed in with MLS and Mexican teams, and the best of Asia and Africa. Eight groups of four, then knockouts, just like the current World Cup setup.

Group D runners up Boca Juniors vs Group C winners Barcelona in the round of 16? Man Utd vs Real Madrid going at each in a quarter-final? None of this two-legged silliness. You’d watch that, right? I certainly would. The TV money alone would be enough to make Sepp Blatter drool, not to mention the usual fast food, fizzy drink and alcoholic beverage people who’d pay handsomely to be involved.

Obviously a proper Club World Cup will almost certainly never happen. Summers are reserved for proper international football (Euros, Copa America, World Cup) and even the most committed players can’t be expected to play year-round, every year, with no chance of rest ever.

So how about this instead: We just accept the Club World Cup pretty much as it is. A flawed tournament that happens every December, and pits the champions of each confederation against each other. Yes, it could use some tweaking. But it’s still pretty interesting as is, and I plan to watch the semi-finals with interest.

  • PEOPLE, YOU ARE ALL BEING STUPID!!!! The Club World Cup ALREADY includes all football clubs from all over the world. These games in Abu Dhabi are nothing but the climax to the year-long, worldwide, CWC tournament that includes Champions Leagues from all over the world. Can't you all see that? There is no need to expand it, it's already the world's largest sports tournament.

I don't think FIFA would go for this because of the risk of such a competition overshadowing the for real World Cup. I, however, think this would be incredibly fun to watch. I do see one other problem, though: Summer schedule. As long as we're including CONCACAF in this hypothetical expanded competition, we'd need to worry about MLS clubs getting involved, and jamming up their schedule even further. The continued improving form of Russian teams also means that they could conceivably make appearances in this, and they'd be dealing with some fixture congestion, too.

And why not follow the WC system to an even greater extent?

Assuming the trophy is always contended in Japan (although it would be better if it changed) :

    Pot 1 - "Favorites"
    UEFA Champions' League winners
    Copa Libertadores winners
    AFC Champions' League winners
    CONCACAF Champions' League winners
    CAF Champions' League winners
    OFC Champions' League winners
    UEFA Champions' League finalists
    Copa Libertadores finalists

    Pot 2 - "Europe"
    Europa League winners
    Europa League finalists
    UEFA Champions' League semi-finalists 1
    UEFA Champions' League semi-finalists 2
    UEFA Champions' League quarter-finalists 1
    UEFA Champions' League quarter-finalists 2
    UEFA Champions' League quarter-finalists 3
    UEFA Champions' League quarter-finalists 4

    Pot 3 - "South America"
    Copa Sudamericana winners
    Copa Sudamericana finalists
    Copa Libertadores semi-finalists 1
    Copa Libertadores semi-finalists 2
    Copa Libertadores quarter-finalists 1
    Copa Libertadores quarter-finalists 2
    Copa Libertadores quarter-finalists 3
    Copa Libertadores quarter-finalists 4

    Pot 4 - "Others"
    CONCACAF Champions' League finalists
CONCACAF Champions' League semi-finalist playoff winners
    AFC Champions' League finalists
AFC Champions' League semi-finalist playoff winners
    CAF Champions' League finalists
    CAF Confederations Cup winners
    CAF Champions' League semi-finalists 1
    CAF Champions' League semi-finalists 2

    Or, this year :

Pot 1 : Barcelona, Estudiantes, Pohang, Atalante, Mazembe, Auckland, Manchester, Cruzeiro

Pot 2 : Shakhtar, Werder, Arsenal, Chelsea, Villareal, Porto, Liverpool, Bayern

Pot 3 : Quito, Fluminense, GrĂªmio, Nacional, Sao Paulo, Palmeiras, Defensor, Caracas

Pot 4 : Cruz Azul, Islanders or Santos Laguna, Al-Ittihad, Grampus or Umm-Salal, Heartland, Stade Malien, Kano, Al-Hilal

It would certainly be les practical to organise... But I'd watch it.

there is 1 thing missing in this competition...the holders! then it would be 8 teams. the team has 2 defend their trophy, am i right or am i wrong??!
so 8 teams, 2 groups of 4, and played in different countries each year. now thats fair.

    Manchester United - Holders
    FC Barcelona - Europe
    Estudiantes - South America
    Atlante FC - North America
    Al Ahli - Asia
    Pohand Steelers - Asia
    Auckland City - Oceania
    Mazembe - Africa

    gracias todas! Javier
  • I actually wouldn't be that excited about watching the super-big club world cup, and suspect it would hurt international football as well. From my point of view, Man U v. Barcelona or Madrid etc happens enough as it is. The only thing that's potentially interesting about this is the South American champ playing the European champ. Make it a proper home-and-home two-legged tie between those two clubs, with two weeks between fixtures. That would generate more interest I think.

Instead of an NFL stadium, it could be played at the Rose Bowl or LA Coliseum instead.
  • Maybe we could break it into a pair of 3-team group stages, with a prelim match between the host and the Oceania champ. That way, you could make the Euro and CONMEBOL champs earn it without taking more than a week out of their schedules. Sure, they'll have to play three matches instead of two, but hey, the winners should feel like they earned it. It's called the Club World Cup, right? (Even if it's actually the Club Confederations Cup, which doesn't quite have that marketing spark to it...)

Personally, I would love to see this event come to the USA, if we could free up a big stadium in, say, Phoenix or Miami or L.A. for a couple of weeks in December -- tricky in cities with NFL teams, perhaps, but not impossible.
  • I'm going to both semi-final matches in Abu Dhabi and I can't wait to see Estudiantes v Pohang Steelers and Barcelona v Atlante... BC from Germany, whinge all you like, at the moment I'm loving the fact that I can go and watch quality mid-season matches, with decent prize money and urgency and not have to fly to Europe or South America to watch them... Club World Cup all the way!

Both the original article and yours seem to assume that it would just be a matter of giving some teams invitations and they would be delighted to take part. Perhaps it would be so on other continents, but truth is, european teams might not be so pleased at the priviledge. I think this whatever-ya-callit thing ( intercontinental cup replacement is what I call it) is the biggest hindrance so far in having any team defend the CL. The trip, the two extra games ( they can crasg out at one, but so far not happened yet) and they rushing up to catch the league will catch up with any team sooner or later.

More teams on this thing would mean more games. And other european teams, other semifinalist or UEFA cup ( pardon, whatever they want to call it this year) winner or random pick might not necessarily be particularly enthusiastic, since winning this thing would in no way compensate not winning the CL or losing points in the home league. the less this cup interferes with the european season the better.
