Alex From the Halfway Line

Not many YouTube football videos are set to techno music. Bit this one is. And though to begin with it just looks like some men you don’t know holding hands… keep watching and you’ll see two excellent goals.

It’s from last week’s UEFA Cup game between Cherno More Varna (from the Bulgarian Premier League) and Maccabi Netanya (from Ligat ha’Al, aka the Israeli Premier League). The latter team happens to be managed by none other than Lothar Matthäus, but the two glorious goals belong to Cherno More Varna.

First goal is from marvelously named 22 year old Bulgarian defender Aleksandar Aleksandrov (aka Alex), who strikes the ball on the volley from damn near the halfway line and sends it straight over Netanya keeper Liran Strauber’s head and in. Incredible stuff. And the second from Andre Pires isn’t too shabby either.

Cherno More Varna won 2-0 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate to make the next round.

Good stuff. Or maybe it’s just the music makes it seem that way. Maybe all UEFA Cup videos should be set to techno music to make the Champions League’s little brother seem that bit more interesting?

    Video doesn't work. (anymore)

Poor goal keeping and lack of quality oposition makes it less memorable, maybe at a higher level of game play might say something. But good video find anyway.
