Similar to the domestic cups. But clubs want guaranteed matches I guess and thus they want a group stage. But the format changes (as 2009/2010) at least make the competition less complicated. There'll be four knockout stages before a new CL style group stage with home and away games. Depending on the league's ranking, clubs will enter the later knockout stages.
