UEFA Cup Draw: The Ignored Little Brother
By: chris | March 14th, 2008
UEFA Cup gets pushed down the ladder enough. Today it was going up against the Champions League draw anyway. Then some dude in Britain went and leaked the draw and pure madness has broken out, with the mass media and Interpol getting involved into what will surely be a massive investigation stealing too much time on the front of sports pages.
Then there’s the UEFA Cup, European competition’s little brother, having its nice, cozy drama and conspiracy theory free draw. Watching while the big brother gets caught hitting the bong in his room before dinner, and the A on younger bro’s book report going unnoticed while his parents give older bro the Fergie hair dryer treatment.
Ladies & gents, the UEFA Cup draw:
2007/08 UEFA Cup quarter-finals
1st leg: 03 April
2nd leg: 10 April
1 Bayer 04 Leverkusen v FC Zenit St. Petersburg
2 Rangers FC v Sporting Clube de Portugal
3 FC Bayern München v Getafe CF
4 ACF Fiorentina v PSV Eindhoven
2007/08 UEFA Cup semi-finals
1st leg: 24 April
2nd leg: 1 May
1 Winner quarter-final 3 v Winner quarter-final 1
2 Winner quarter-final 2 v Winner quarter-final 4
2007/08 UEFA Cup final
City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester
Wednesday 14 May
* - Ian has a way prettier bracket style here.
So Getafe, the surprise of this year’s continental competitions, draws big bad Bayern, the easy favorite for the whole tournament. Let’s just hope they imagine it’s Real Madrid and make it unexpectedly to the semis.
And if I were a betting man, I’d put my check on Luca Toni doing in the final what he went to Bavaria not to do: play against Fiorentina.

PSV v. Bayern all the way.

Rangers, should they triumph over Sporting, will be a huge hurdle for Fiorentina even if they do go past PSV, don’t you think? It may well be an Everton-style game, and that could end badly a second time around.

I think the big factor is, even more importantly than Mutu, Liverani will be back. There was a clear gameplan on beating Everton this week and Fiorentina just couldn’t execute it. They needed a veteran who could sit on the ball, slow down the children and pull the strings. If they can play a slower tempo, the Viola should walk through Rangers. The bigger test is PSV.
