Willy Sagnol Expects to Steamroll Aberdeen

sagnol2.jpgYou have to love the British tabloids. Who else could come up with a headline like “Cocky Willy Disses Dons”?

What really upsets me about this particular headline is that we at The Offside didn’t think of it first.

But the article is actually about soccer, believe it or not. Seems Bayern Munich rightback Willy Sagnol is none too impressed with Aberdeen, Munich’s upcoming UEFA Cup opponents.

BAYERNMUNICH star Willy Sagnol says it would be the biggest disaster of his club’s season if the German giants lost to Aberdeen. The French full-back believes Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side should have too much quality for Jimmy Calderwood’s side in Thursday’s UEFA Cup clash.

Sagnol admits the Germans haven’t even considered anything other than a victory over the Dons – and anything less would be a catastrophe.

The 30-year-old, who played against Celtic in the Champions League group stages in 2003, said: “We are clear favourites for this match and we’re ready to confirm everyone’s predictions.

“This isn’t Celtic or Rangers we’re playing and we have more experience and technical ability.

Right. Well, then.

I know that Munich made it to the knockout stages of Champions League last year. And they’re currently top of the table in the Bundesliga. And Aberdeen sits a distant fifth in the SPL table.

But maybe somebody should remind Willy that words like this frequently come back to bite folks in their oh-so-cocky personal parts.

Yup, this comes with the job. Even Klose appears more arrogant these days. And Torsten Frings never recovered from it, after his spell at Bayern.
  • Of course he's arrogant. He's a Bayern Munich player of long standing. That's what they are.

A month ago, I would have given Dons a much better shot, but injuries and bad form make this a huge long shot. I'll be pulling for you, Dons. Their run has already been impressive, no matter what happens here.

Well....it's true, but as the saying goes, "That's why the game is played on the pitch and not on paper."
