Weekend Watch: Don’t Get Chicken
By: Laurie | April 18th, 2008
Big weekend for plenty of teams. Let’s hope they keep their heads.
Saturday
Real Zaragoza vs Recreativo Huelva
While the La Liga title race hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, the relegation battle still looks mighty exciting. Zaragoza are currently in 18th place and staring relegation in the face. Huelva are currently clear of both Zaragoza and demotion in 17th place, but only be three points. So this game is massive. The loser could be playing Segunda Divsion football next season.
LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo
On the one side, we have the MLS reigning champs. On the other side, we have David Beckham’s team. Both sides are struggling for points this season. After three games, LA has three and Houston has two. Both are looking to make up some ground here. Think we’ll see some sexy football?
Sunday
Bordeaux vs. Toulouse
Toulouse is sixteenth in France’s Ligue 1 and just three points out of the relegation zone. Bordeaux is second, trailing league leaders Lyon by a mere four points. A win for Toulouse could help pull them to safety. A win for Bordeaux and a Lyon misstep or two could propel Bordeaux one step closer to a shock league upset. Both teams are going to want this badly.
Newcastle vs Sunderland
Both teams are more or less safe from relegation, so you could argue they have nothing to play for. Except that it’s the Tyne-Wear derby, the first in which Kevin Keegan and Roy Keane (two managers with very different styles) have faced each other. With 14th place Sunderland just three points behind 12th place Newcastle (and 13th place Middlesbrough between them) this result will go along way towards determining the North East pecking order for 2007/8.
Standard Liege vs Anderlecht
Standard Liege are seven points clear of Anderlecht at the top of the Belgian league, so it’s pretty much win or give up on the title for Anderlecht here. They’ll have to get past the man-mountain that is Oguchi Onyewu to score though.
Etoile du Sahel vs Club African
The two Tunisia giants clash in what should be a title decider, with Club African just two points behind Etoile du Sahel and the end of the season fast approaching. Both teams will be without their star strikers with Amine Chermiti and Youssef Mouihbi both picking up too many yellow cards. Rami has the full preview on Tunisia WCB.
Vitesse Arnhem vs PSV Eindhoven
The Dutch title goes down to the last day of the season. Again. PSV just need a point - a win or a draw, anything but a defeat - and a fourth consecutive Eredivisie title is theirs. If they fail, then Ajax just need to Heracles Almelo to snatch the trophy out from under PSV’s noses.

On Saturday, it’s the DFB-Pokal final in Germany. Or in English, the German Cup final. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will be ‘fighting’ it out in Berlin. For both clubs, there are reasons why they want to win this.
For Bayern, this will be the start of a treble (the other two is the UEFA Cup and the Bundesliga title…which they are on the verge of winning it anyway) the club has been aiming for. Especially given coach Ottmar Hitzfeld will be coaching Switzerland after Euro 2008. For him, this means he will be able to leave Bayern Munich on a high.
For Borussia Dortmund, the current regular Bundesliga season has not been going well for them (the last I found out, 13 out of the 18 places in the Bundesliga standings) and coach Thomas Doll’s job is on the line (or so I read). Though they have already earned a spot in the UEFA Cup next season by being in the final (given Bayern will be in the Champions League next season no matter the outcome of the DFB-Pokal final), the current Bundesliga standings is not doing any good for this former 1996/1997 Champions League winners. Ironically back then the coach who led Dortmund to Champions League glory was, Ottmar Hitzfeld.
But don’t count on him giving any sympathy to his former employers, though facing Dortmund in the final is a highlight for him. And oh, Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn will be playing in his last DFB-Pokal final match before hanging up his gloves at the end of the football season. Another reason why Bayern will want to win this.
