Weekend Watch Recap: Jump for Joy
By: Daryl | February 25th, 2008Catching up with the weekend action.
Saturday
Japan 1-1 South Korea
A win for either side guaranteed the East Asian Cup. South Korea took a 15th minute lead through Yeom Ki-Hun but Japan equalised through Koji Yamase in the 68th, leaving South Korea top of the group only by virtue of superior goals scored. The South Koreans still had to nervously sit through China vs North Korea and hope their Northern neighbours didn’t win 2-0 or better. They didn’t. China won 3-1 (the hosts only win of the tournament) and South Korea get the trophy.
Groclin Dyskobolia 1-0 Legia Warszawa
Fourth placed Dsykobolia claimed a 1-0 win over second place Legia in the Polish league thanks to Piotr Rocki’s 52nd minute goal. The defeat means Legia now trail leaders Wisla Kraków by 11 points. And before anyone points it out, I got it wrong on Friday by putting Legia as the home team.
Newcastle United 1-5 Manchester United
Another day, another Newcastle disaster. King Kev was optimistic that with all his Africa Cup of Nations players back and with a long break to work together, his team would perform better. And they sort of did, because last time Newcastle played Man Utd they lost 6-0. This time it was only 5-1.
Sunday
Chelsea 1-2 Tottenham aet
Juande Ramos is unstoppable in cup competitions. After his UEFA Cup ownership with Sevilla, he’s waltzed into Tottenham and got himself a Carling Cup. His team were even behind, to an nonchalant Didier Drogba free kick, but a Dimitar Berbatov penalty levelled things up, before Jonathan Woodgate’s double header won it in extra time. Celebratory images and a review of the action on Spurs Offside. Not quite so celebratory images on Chelsea Offside.
Bayern Munich 1-1 Hamburg
North vs South and first vs third in the Bundesliga. The normally reliable Lucio went a bit mad and tried to dribble straight up the field for Bayern, which resulted in Olic giving Hamburg the lead. Roberto equalised via Franck Ribery to make it 1-1 and earn Bayern a useful point. Match report on Bayern Offside. With second placed Werder Bremen losing 1-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, Bayern extended their lead at the top to four points.
Central Coast Mariners vs Newcastle Jets
The Newcastle Jets finally overcame the Central Coast Mariners after playing second fiddle all season. Mark Bridge scored the only goal of the game for a historic first Jets title, but the game will mostly be remembered for Central Coast keeper Danny Vukovic getting a nine (and possibly more) month suspension for giving the ref an over-enthusiastic high five.

Also interesting this weekend in Romania, the country’s top teams continue their slide in form with 2nd place Rapid Bucharest dropping 3 points to the worst team in the league and Steaua Bucharest dropping points to a crap team to fall out of Intertoto Cup range.
The Romanians are rapidly losing the luster they had last season.
