Weekend Watch: Send in the Clones
By: Daryl | February 29th, 2008
A quick guide to the weekend’s action:
Saturday
Arsenal vs Aston Villa
The Premier League leaders face a tough test from Martin O’Neill’s men, in their first game since Eduardo’s injury. We’ll see if the whole thing pulls Arsenal closer together, and we’ll also see if Theo Walcott has finally become a man. Arsenal are just three points clear of Man Utd, and Fergie’s men are playing Fulham “late collapse” FC, so Wenger will need a result here.
Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona
The race for La Liga is on baby on with Barcelona just two points behind leaders Real Madrid. But Barca need to keep up the momentum they started last weekend and beat fourth placed Atletico Madrid. Atletico themselves aren’t in great form, but they do have little Sergio Aguero, so this should be quite a clash.
Lille vs Lyon
It’s the tenth anniversary of the magnificent Stade de France this weekend, so this game has been moved there to celebrate. Lyon’s lead over Bordeaux is down to just three points now, and there’s the big Champions League game against Manchester United in midweek to worry about, so the pressure’s on. Big news is that the 75,000 expected to turn up for this game is likely to shatter the previous Ligue 1 attendance record of 57,609.
Sunday
Sporting Lisbon vs Benfica
It’s the Lisbon derby. Benfica are in second and Sporting in fourth, and league leaders Porto are so far ahead (12 points clear) that Benfica need a win just to keep Porto in sight.
Juventus vs Fiorentina
Next season’s Champions League spots are at stake when third hosts fourth in Serie A. With AC Milan breathing down everyone’s neck neither will want to lose this, while Alessandro Del Piero will hope to keep reminding Roberto Donadoni that he’s available for work this summer.
Besiktas vs Galatasaray
Another week, another Istanbul derby. Last week’s Fenerbahce vs Galatasaray cup game produced four red cards, three goals and a Galatasaray win. This one’s a league game, with Galatasaray in first, but Besiktas just two points behind them in third. If you own a hat, hold on to it.

Hibernian v. Celtic on Saturday should be a great match. Celtic has won 9 straight in the league, but the last two have been very shaky. Hibs are on four straight wins, and have taken a win and a draw from their two matches so far with the Bhoys. Hibs were also the last team to take points from Celtic, but with four points separating Rangers and Celtic, they really need to take all three. Should be a fun one.

Japple, I haven’t seen this particular picture, but the team is currently on an Asian tour. Their first game was against Seoul FC last night. Judging by the fact that they’re dressed for the cold, my guess is it was taken then.

alright cause i swear that turf, those white fences, and the trees behind them makes it look a lot like the field at my old school.
