Weekend Watch: Show Your Support
By: Daryl | March 21st, 2008
There’s a big weekend of action ahead. But the question is: Who will that guy on the right will be supporting?
Saturday
Sevilla vs Atletico Madrid
Atletico currently occupy fourth place in La Liga, which means Champions League qualification if they can hold onto it. But Sevilla are just two points behind them, so a win means leapfrogging El Kun and co. You’ve heard of six-pointers, well Sevilla’s sports director Monchi Rodriguez says this game is a seven pointer: The three you win, the three you take off the other side and one more for the goal average.”
Inter vs Juventus
Inter lead Roma by seven points, but it’s all looking a bit shaky. Roberto Mancini appears to have lost control of his players and can’t decide if he’s quitting or not. So while Inter vs Juve is always a big game, it’s even bigger this time. Especially as Roma will expect to pick up three points against second from bottom Empoli.
Gretna vs Celtic
With the many, many problems at Gretna, it was possible they’d be unable to complete their Scottish Premier League fixtures this season. But the SPL have given the club and advance on some money owed and now Gretna’s administrator says they can play on. Will be fascinating to see if the players respond against Celtic.
Sunday
It’s Super Duper Grand Slam Happy Mega Sunday in the Premier League again, with the big four in a big clusterf… clash at the top.
Manchester United vs Liverpool
Ah, the northwest derby. The managers are already going at it, and soon the players will too. Both teams go into this one in great form, with two big players recently passing landmarks. Cristiano Ronaldo broke George Best’s record, while Fernando Torres proved once and for all that he is a “20 goals a season” kind of guy. United are currently three points clear of second placed Arsenal and 11 clear of Liverpool, but could be missing Rio Ferdinand, who’s got back knack.
Chelsea vs Arsenal
Despite dropping two points against Spurs on Wednesday, Chelsea have been putting pressure on the top two recently. And a win at Stamford Bridge would see the home team replace the visitors in second place. Big day for Arsenal then, who haven’t won a Premier League game since Eduardo’s injury and could lose all momentum with a defeat here.
Deportivo Cali vs America de Cali
You’d think these two teams would never be allowed to play each other ever again after what happened last time.. But it’s the Cali derby in the Colombian league, so look out.
Any other games we should be keeping an eye on this weekend? Let us know…

It’s Lyon vs. PSG this Sunday!!! That game is gonna be huge because both teams need the points but for entirely different reasons. Also, it’s the first time Le Guen is returning to the Gerland (in an official capacity) since he stepped down as Lyon coach back in 2005.

2 “grand slam” sundays in one season? What are the odds of that (amidst thoughts of fixture tampering)? Well here are the odds that I calculated whilst waiting for the Malaysian grand prix qualifying to start:
prob no “grand slam” weekends in the season = 82.97%
prob only 1 grand slam weekend in the season = 15.74%
prob only 2 = 1.241%
prob only 3 = 0.05206%
prob only 4 = 0.00001226%
prob only 5 = 0.0000001536%
prob 6 = 0.0000000007998%
That’s it: there can only be 6 “grand slams” if only 4 teams count. Now, I spent a fair amount of thought figuring these out, so somebody had better find these useful…!Posted from

It will also be interesting to see if the Gretna players even play, as they have not been payed in a long time and there was talk of them not playing because of it!
