Refs Get Some Egyptian Brotherly Love

By: chris | Comments No Comments

You’re got twin brothers. One’s the coach for Egyptian club El-Masry, the other is the assistant. First brother is Hossam Hassan, Egyptian national team legend. He’s sent off for disputing the referee’s calls, thus enters his brother Ibrahim. Ibrahim, as any brother of the world’s most capped player ever would, tries to carve his own [...]

Didier Drogba Doesn’t Want to Be 2008 African Footballer of the Year

By: Daryl | Comments 6 Comments

The Confederation of African Football named its shortlist of five for 2008 African Footballer of the Year yesterday, and Didier Drogba’s name was on there. Problem is: Didier Drogba wants nothing to do with the award.
Seems odd to not want to be named the best player in your confederation, but Drogba has his reasons: After [...]

By: Daryl | Comments 1 Comment

Unfancied CFR Cluj and FC BATE Borisov have made good starts to their UEFA Champions League campaigns (Cluj are still unbeaten after playing Roma away and Chelsea at home). But they have a long long way to go to match Dynamos FC of Harare, Zimbabwe.
Despite facing multiple political and economic problems (eg Robert Mugabe and [...]

New African Soccer Magazine is Now Free

By: Daryl | Comments 2 Comments

Back in January we spent a month covering the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations on WCB. The three things I took away from this were:
1) African football is on the rise, 2) Manucho is a damn fine footballer, and 3) There’s not nearly enough written about African football.
What I mean by 3) is that [...]

Al-Ahly Dominating the Cairo Derby

By: Daryl | Comments No Comments

If you’re wondering why Zamalek keeper Mohamed Abdel Monsef looks so distraught in the above video, it’s because he knows Zamalek have just lost to Al-Ahly. Again.
Moetaz Eno’s cracking goal one minute from time made it 2-0 to Al-Ahly in the Egyptian Super Cup, which means Zamalek have beaten Al-Ahly just once in the [...]

By: Daryl | Comments 3 Comments

This is the goal that won the massive Cairo derby yesterday. Al-Ahly vs Zamalek is always always massive in Egypt, but yesterday the old foes faced off in the first game of the CAF Champions League group stages.

The Offside Euro 2008 Champion: Charles Snyder

By: Dave Martinez | Comments 5 Comments

Over three weeks of tournament action and only one country stood tall: Sweden. Ibrahimovich proved to be unstoppable in the virtual world, earning glory for his country where the real world left a bit to be desired. Standing in the finals against a tough Croatian squad, they dispatched their opponents 2-1 for [...]

By: Laurie | Comments 5 Comments

It’s that nailbiting time of the season in most leagues, especially for those teams that are close to the top and in the title race, or close to the bottom and facing relegation. So how did some of the games from the weekend turn out?

The Other, Other Champions League

By: Ian Rose | Comments 1 Comment

As UEFA prepares for its first big week of semifinals (both in the Champions League and UEFA Cup), and the Copa Libertadores moves on to the knockouts, here’s a reminder that there is, in fact, continental football going on right now elsewhere in the world. Specifically, in Africa, where the CAF Champions League is [...]

Al-Ahly Win Cairo Derby, Continue to Dominate Egyptian League

By: Daryl | Comments 1 Comment

It was the Cairo derby last night, easily the biggest and best game in Egyptian football. Africa Cup of Nations heroes Mohamamed Aboutreika and Essam Al-Hadary were both missing for Al-Ahly, the former through injury, the latter suspended following his attempted defection to FC Sion.
But Al-Ahly continued to dominate their rivals Zamalek, claiming a 2-0 [...]

Is Essam El-Hadary Testing Webster Ruling? Maybe, maybe not

By: Laurie | Comments 5 Comments

Is Essam El-Hadary going to be our test case for the Webster ruling, or isn’t he? The battle is on.
Just last week Daryl was saying that Essam El-Hadary, the African Cup of Nations-winning goalkeeper from Egypt, was going to be testing the limits of Webster. Webster, if you remember, is the extremely controversial [...]

Google Wants Everyone to Know…

By: Laurie | Comments 4 Comments

Google would like you to know that, contrary to rumor, they do not censor images for political content. Even explosive little hot potatoes like this one of Egyptian player Mohamed Aboutreika at the African Cup of Nations.
From the blog from a Google software engineer.
Every now and then a story surfaces that Google [...]
