16 Soccer Postcards

By: Daryl | May 21st, 2009

I was reading Football Filter recently (which I recommend, by the way) and came across a link to this Flickr pool devoted to soccer postcards.

The pool does exactly what it says on the box, and currently consists of 275 images of football related postcards. Some are images of stadiums, some of players, some are part of an advertising campaign. Some are completely random.

I’ve selected sixteen of my faves (was going to be ten, but there were too many to choose from) below…

The Camp Nou looking nice and full.

Soccer ball structure in Da Lian City, China.

The San Siro. Which – according to this postcard – only has one tenant.

Home ground of Italian Serie C1 club Potenza.

A fantastic looking Championship stadium.

(note to self: delete that if they stay up)

A DirecTV (US satelite TV provider) advertising postcard aimed at Spanish speaking potential customers, promising “more futbol than football.”

HSV Hamburg’s HSH Nordbank Arena, in various stages of construction.

La Bombonera, home of Boca Juniors of course.

You don’t need me to tell you who this is.

Olympic Staium in Munich. After a visit from Spiderman

Photogrpah of Ollie Kahn.

Jari Litmanen reading the paper.

And Jari Litmanen hosting a dinner party for soccer balls, I think. There are a LOT of Jari Litmanen postcards in this Flickr pool by the way.

First I thought this Italian postcard was promoting a televised Barca vs Real El Clasico from 2006. But the date (January 5th 2006) doesn’t match up, and I think it’s actually promoting a DVD. So maybe Ronaldinho and Zidane actually had a high noon style shootout in 2006. In which case I’m assuming Ronaldinho lost.

Stadium Meteor in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine. Home of FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk until they left in 2008. Love the floodlights on the postcard.

Can you spot the ball?

To browse the other postcards (including the ones that were undownloadable) I highly recommend visiting the Flickr Soccer Postcards pool.

    me too! lol

Great find, Daryl. btw not sure if you were kidding or not, but the Olympicstadium in Munich (and the entire park around it) always look like that – the spidey-roofs weren’t just there temporarily.

I also love how the Ronaldinho/Zidane one says
‘The biggest golden balls’ at the top.

and by the san siro having only one tenant, the card is red/black for ac milan, and doesn’t show that inter also plays there.

Colman, yeah I know. It was just a badly worded attempt at humour. I actually quite like how it looks.

Weston, Mike answered that one. Again, just badly worded on my part.

The San Siro district of Milan has hundreds to thousands of ‘tenets’.

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza has 2 organizations as tenets.

Like the last one you posted, Daryl. Cute. But I am not sure if I managed to find the ball though.

    Diana,

It’s tough. Took me a while too. I don’t want to ruin it for everyone else just yet, but if it gets annoying then I can let you know via email if needed.

It reads “knights of the round ball” on the second Litmanen-card.
