$20 million a year offer for Jose Mourinho
By: Bob | September 26th, 2007
There have been a lot of places mentioned as the destination where Jose Mourinho will coach next. He could be Portugal’s boss. He could go to a big club in Spain or Italy or he might end up with another team in the Premier League. One place that wasn’t on anyone’s radar is the United Arab Emirates. Today we learn that the tiny Gulf state made a big run at the former Chelsea boss.
According the reports, the UAE offered Mourinho something in the neighborhood of $20 million a year to guide its national team to glory. That is a national team that is ranked 102nd in the world, a couple of spots higher than the always dangerous St. Vincent and the Grenadines. That is also a salary that is nearly double what Mourinho made at Chelsea. There are your high oil prices at work.
It apparently isn’t enough to get the Special One to put his name on the dotted line as he reportedly is holding out for something better, which undoubtedly will be something that doesn’t involve the 102nd ranked team in the world, but does include more money than one can stuff under a mattress.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have denied reports that they have offered their coaching job to Holland manager Marco van Basten. Sven-Goran Eriksson has denied reports that he is interested in the Chelsea gig. Somehow I think it might be prudent for current manager Avram Grant to start working on his résumé.

Actually, Bob, it’s not double what Mourinho made at Chelsea. The dollar has sunk so much that this offer converts to roughly 10 pounds per year.

Excellent photo. Proof that Mourinho, can, in fact, look as dorky as the next guy.

Greg, I think I saw he was making 5.5 million pounds at Chelsea and this deal was for 10 million. And yes, the dollar sucks in Europe at the moment.

Yeah, I meant literally 10 pounds. Like one – zero. Not 10 million. That’s how bad the dollar is, it’s worth less than a two dollar whore (figure THAT one out). And that’s how it’s printed in the Wall Street Journal if you want to look for yourself: $

Coaching the 102nd team in the world to the world cup would be a monumental challenge for any coach! And for $20 million… But is it possible, or would he be destined to fail. You have to have the talent, and that started 10-20 years ago when the current players were children. That is a monster project that would include development within the youth program!!!!

Having just returned from the UK, I can wholeheartedly agree with Andy … the dollar is great for the UK … pretty terrible for the US tourist in the UK … but awesome for the Brits.
