2006 UEFA Team of the Year

By: Bob | January 19th, 2007

2006-team.jpgThe ballots have been counted and the final results are in for UEFA’s Team of 2006. The online voting was done by fans from around the world and unlike those selections made by the media and by the players, the fans are largely correct in selecting the best players from last year. As you can see in the list below, there are four players from Barcelona in the top 11 and three players that represented Italy in the World Cup. There is also Carles Puyol, I would have gone with John Terry. I probably would have picked Franck Ribery over Cesc Fabregas, but I am stupid that way. Zinedine Zidane isn’t on the list nor should he be. By the way, 390,000 people voted and there were 4 million total votes so on average each person voted about 10 times. Democracy in action.

Gianluigi Buffon (Italy/Juventus)
Gianluca Zambrotta (Italy/FC Barcelona)
Fabio Cannavaro (Italy/Real Madrid),
Carlos Puyol (Spain/FC Barcelona)
Philipp Lahm (Germany/Bayern Munich)
Steven Gerrard (England/Liverpool)
Cesc Fabregas (Spain/Arsenal)
Kaka (Brazil/AC Milan)
Ronaldinho (Brazil/FC Barcelona)
Thierry Henry (France/Arsenal)
Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon/FC Barcelona).
Coach: Frank Rijkaard (FC Barcelona)

Do you agree with these selections?

Man, I only voted three times. Maybe if I’d done my share there would be more of my French guys represented. But it is good to see Henry with some kind of award at last.

Like them all except for Fabregas. Cristiano Ronaldo should probably be on there instead of him.

All I have to add to this discussion is: Mmm … Zambrotta.

Oh, and I agree with Walt — C. Ronaldo ought to be in there.

Some good talents, but it makes me wonder who actually votes for these lists.

As much as I admire the work ethic of Steven Gerrard, I think C.Ronaldo has been much more consistent over the past year, and played a bigger role for Portugal at the WC than Gerrard did for England.

I’d also pick Didier Drogba over Eto’o. An asshole, but a very skilled asshole.

Nobody in their right mind would pick Cristiano over Gerrard. Played a bigger role at the World Cup? Gerrard led his team in scoring and made some spectacular defensive plays. That’s right Stevie-G plays defense, a word Ronaldo I doubt can spell. Ridiculous, not to mention his team won the FA Cup because of the single best performance of a player the whole year.

Am I going crazy or when you voted for the team on the UEFA site, didn’t you also vote for who should be captain? If that’s right, when will they reveal the results of that vote?

Absolutely, Sam! Juninho totally belongs on this list. I think Lyon has a lot of the best players nobody’s ever heard of. If only everybody were healthy they could make their mark on Champions League this year and get the respect they deserve.

    Maybe they will anyway?

C.ronaldo still not quite there to deserve a spot. But the italians in this team definently do NOT deserve their spot.. ESPECIALLY MR GK… There are many better goal keepers who have performed so much better than him this year. Mark swartzer for one (Biased australia, but he is damn impressive).Fab doesnt deserve spot, nor does Lahm or gerrard, countless numbers of people could replace them.

This are in doubt the most talented playersin the world. The world has witnessed the evolution of new generation of players who are so competitive like Cesc Fabregas.
