$70,000 for a Private Soccer Lesson from David Beckham

david-beckham-batman.jpgI love the New York Post’s Page Six. I always feel dirty and in need of a shower after I read it, but it is a guilty pleasure that ranks right up there with having a shot of bourbon for breakfast. Today’s Page Six dedicates some space to slagging David Beckham, something all too uncommon in American newspapers.

From the Post:

February 27, 2007 — THE citizens of Southern California are unexcited about their $250 million man, David Beckham, who is coming to play for the L.A. Galaxy soccer team. Despite the charms of auctioneer Sharon Stone, the lowest-selling lot at the Elton John AIDS benefit on Oscar night was a private soccer lesson from the Brit, which went for $70,000. “Guess it shows how much Americans care about soccer,” quipped one guest. The embarrassing bidding prompted Brandon Davis to tell his friends, “Let’s get the [bleep] out of here.”

What a great angle to take. Instead of proclaiming the craziness of someone actually spending $70,000 to do anything with David Beckham it is seen as an indictment of the level of interest in soccer in the United States. Brilliant.

What the story fails to mention is that P. Diddy was reportedly one of the celebs bidding on the Beckham lesson but he bailed out when it got to $65,000. You know he would have scrapped together an extra $5k if the lesson was with a Gunner.

  • Yeah, what on earth is going on there? I thought the story would be how insanely great it was that a soccer lesson raised 70 grand. But that's the problem with data - it's too easy to manipulate its meaning.
