9-1 Is Probably A Good Time For A Refund

Presumably you’ve heard the scoreline already, if only because you can read headlines. That thrashing, the second worst in Premier League history, which will serve to haunt Wigan from now until the end of time. Made all the more insane in that five of the goals came via the boot of Jermain Defoe, a man who will never, or so you would think, quake the boots with Gerd Muller-esque efficiency. The same Jermain Defoe on pace the greatest chance-to-goal conversion rate in Premier League history at the moment (imagine a link source which is my eyes on Sky News right now), and whose five goals tied the Prem record.

So after Tottenham ran riot, Wigan did the only thing they could do: refund their fans’ tickets.

Mario Melchiot tells us just why these fans should get their money back.

“must not be taken for granted. We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters yesterday, and this is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their tremendous loyalty.

“There is not a lot else to say, just that as a group of professionals we were embarrassed by the way we performed, we feel it was below our standards and this is something we feel we owe to the fans. Now we have to draw a line under the game, focus completely on training this week and bounce back on Saturday.

“We are professionals, we will take it on the chin and move on but it’s important that we do not take our supporters for granted.”

Nice gesture and all, but a slight problem in that where does one draw the line? Nine to bleeping one is an easy call, but what happens when a 4-1 loss with fatigue cloaked as perceived indifference angers fans enough into looking for another refund. One they obviously will not get. Much like feeding a stray animal, it’s a good deed, but one which could be rife with long term problems. Such as rabies.

Now if only Wigan could refund the time of everyone who was forced to read a Five-star Defoe headline.

It is a nice gesture but was the payout for Defoe scoring 5 goals in a game? That would be a great bet to win.

Maybe the Wigan board put some money on Defoe scoring five and are now using that money to refund the tickets?

Also, Oscar Peterson, I’m going to assume that your slightly off-topic comment being about betting and your name linking to a betting site are purely coincidental.
