A 35-pound book about Pele that costs a mere $3,000
By: Bob | November 21st, 2006
If you are a huge fan of Pele you might want to start lifting some weights and cashing out your retirement funds. A new book, “Pelé: Edson Arantes do Nascimento,” is on the market now and let’s just say that it is probably unlike any other book on your bookshelves.
The New York Times (via Du Nord) describes the new tome in the following way:
So how better to celebrate the man at 66 than with a silk-swaddled tome of 720 pages that is 2¾ inches thick, weighs 35 pounds and measures nearly 18 by 14 inches? It contains 1,700 images and 300,000 words by numerous sportswriters and interviews with some of Pelé’s teammates between covers in the green and yellow of Brazil’s national team.
The cost for destroying an entire forest for each book?
Of the 2,500, 2,100 will sell for $3,000.
Another 250 are priced at $3,750 because the photographer Marvin Newman signed his 16-by-20-inch picture of Pelé in Central Park in 1975.
The last 150, priced at $11,000 and signed by the surviving members of Brazil’s World Cup-winning 1970 team, have sold out, Naqvi said.
If you are bummed that you can’t get the $11,000 version, you could always combine your cheaper purchase with the definitive (and costly) book about Manchester United.

I can relate: I once bought a pamphlet about Titus Bramble for a dime.
But the real questions, Bob, is how much would you pay for a giant coffee table book about Ollie Kahn?

Good question. An Ollie Kahn coffee table book would fit nicely next to my copy of Great Moments in Famine. Maybe I’ll add that to my Christmas wish list…
