A Bad, Bad Day for City
By: Martha | January 28th, 2008
On the pitch yesterday, Manchester City were busy (using the term loosely) tilting at balloons, and being beaten by Championship side Sheffield United. United were the best team for at least half the match, and manager Bryan Robson (who you may recall once played for a certain other “United”) must have loved to see his struggling team handing City their asses, simultaneously letting him keep his job for a bit longer and dumping his old rivals out of the FA Cup.
And, to make matters worse for City, while they were being beaten on the pitch, thieves were busy in the changing room, robbing them blind.
According to press reports, thieves turned over the visitors’ locker room at Bramall Lane at some point during the match, taking up to £2000 from City players and backroom staff. There’s no indication of whether anyone actually broke in, or if the door was left unlocked, but in addition to being beaten be a lower-league club, City found themselves out cash, watches and mobile phones (though the thieves were considerate enough to leave behind the wallets they’d emptied out).
In the grand scheme of things, though, the theft is probably a minor bother — I’m guessing Micah Richards will be ok without the £100 he may have had in his wallet, and Sven Goran Eriksson is clearly more concerned with the officials’ unwillingness to “kill” the balloons that were invading the pitch than with whether or not he’s got to buy a new mobile.
