A Marta Bobblehead? Women’s Soccer Has Truly Arrived
By: Laurie | June 14th, 2009
How do you know when your sport has arrived in the bigtime? When its star player gets turned into a bobblehead. This is exactly what has happened to LA Sol’s Marta from the WPS (Women’s Professional Soccer) league. It’s a promo for their upcoming game against Chicago.
Oh, come on. You know. A bobblehead. A little plastic person with a head that bobs up and down. Exactly like the one below. Except, y’know, female. And Brazilian. And wearing the name of a sponsor on her chest which is SO not a pyramid scheme.
(Plus he probably never scored a hat trick.)

Huh? How does a promotion mean women’s soccer has arrived? If anything, a promotion of $30 for two tickets, a bobblehead, and a $50 ESPNZone gamecard means the women’s soccer is in trouble. Especially if you consider the WPS is in it’s first season and the average salary per player is a meager $32000.

I didn’t even know that we had a women’s soccer league.

Yeah, and MLS is such a great league with guys making $17K a year. At least you get to see the best players in the world with WPS. They can string together more than 2 passes.

i would take $32000 a year to play a game for a living.

I would take that salary too! If only I were good enough…nicely done Kurt L, nicely done.
