A Name to Remember: Carlos Vela
By: Bob | May 18th, 2007
Rare is the example of a Mexican international playing in the English Premier League. Jared Borgetti became the first to play in England’s top league when he played 19 games for Bolton in 2005. Eighteen-year-old Carlos Vela might be the next Mexican talent to see time in the Premiership.
Vela currently is on loan to Salamanca in the Spanish Second Division from Arsenal. He has scored eight goals in 28 games this season. He started his career in the Chivas youth system and gained international attention when he won the Golden Boot as the top goal scorer in the U-17 World Cup in 2005.
That attracted the attention of Arsenal, who beat out a number of teams to sign him. The Gunners inked him to a five-year deal and then loaned him to Celta de Vigo who then loaned him to Salamanca because they couldn’t have another non-EU player on their roster.
Vela has been touted as the “next Hugo Sanchez” because his style of play is similar to the former Real Madrid star and current Mexico national team coach. Whether or not Vela will become the first Mexican player to have a lasting impact in the English Premier League remains to be seen, but he certainly is A Name to Remember.
