A Name to Remember: Edgardo “Gato” Obregon

By: Daryl | September 23rd, 2008

Ladies and gents, allow me to introduce you to Edgardo Obregon, aka Gato.

Gato is just nine years old, but he’s likely already outgrown more tricks that most fully grown professional footballers will ever remember. Details are a little hard to come by (which is probably how it should be with regards to talented nine year old kids) but I can tell you this: 1) he’s Mexican, 2) he was born in 1999(!) and 3) he’s so far represented Chivas de Guadalajara, Barcelona and Milan in youth tournaments. Which means he’s already had quite a career for an under 10.

Most recently he was playing for an AC Milan youth team so the coaches could have a look at him, which I think is where most of the footage in this jaw to the floor YouTube vid is from:

Think it’s safe to assume Milan were impressed, because Gato has some serious #10 skills. And if you’re like me then you’ll immediately be thinking things like “wow, how long before we can see him in Serie A?”, “will he take Italian citizenship or play for Mexico?” and “isn’t Gato Spanish for something or other?”

The answers are “A long time”, “don’t know” and “yes, cat”.

No doubt Gato is a name to remember but it’s still far too early to be thinking about what could happen 10 years from now. I could probably wreak similar havoc on those pint-sized defences, assuming pushing kids over is allowed.

So, for now at least, it’s probably better to just sit back and wow at the skills on display in this YouTube vid and we’ll check in with Gato again in just under a decade.

I have seen better. There is always going to be a stand out in little kid leagues. Well it is kind of smart to develop him with a world class team at that age. I hope he becomes great and stays with Mexico.

He is pretty good and has good ball control skills. Look at this video on You Tube: Jack AC Milan Junior Camp Highlights. He is the first 7 year old that I have seen who plays excellent defense and actually passes the ball. He is all over the field. Love the half volley goal and his pass on the 2-1 breakaway

All that talk about a 9 year old kid seems a little stupid and premature, but today after seeing him play, I became a fan of the kid! I don’t even think he realizes that he plays with kids older than him. I could not image what he would do playing with kids his own age. He would just get bored. Sorry, but all that fuzz about this little boy is very much accurate and I just hope his parents and coaches do a good job working on his development. His potential is exceptional and his capacity to dribble, read plays and complete a play with an amazing finish is not of a 9 year old is not of a 9 year old kid. Best of luck to the him. I know now why the call the kid the Cat – J.R. Miramar, Florida
