A Name to Remember: Fred
By: Bob | September 6th, 2006
It was only a couple of months ago that we encountered a man named Fred who played and scored for Brazil in the World Cup. The Fred phenomenon, short-lived that it might have been, has left a soft spot in our collective hearts.
While that man named Fred still plays for Lyon in France, another Fred – Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva – is making a name for himself in Australia’s A-League. Like his namesake, he is a forward from Brazil. This Fred was signed by the Melbourne Victory in the offseason and after two games down under he is embroiled in a bit of controversy.
Fred has been handed a three-game ban for an elbow he apparently laid on Sydney FC’s Mark Milligan. The Brazilian was not punished during the game even though there are reports that the blow led Milligan to almost swallow his tongue. It was only after the video was reviewed that the punishment was handed out.
The Melbourne Victory have come to the defense of the man named Fred by offering up video that they say clears him of any wrongdoing. They’ve gone so far as to hire a bio-mechanics specialist to testify on Fred’s behalf. Who knew that such a thing even existed?
Try as we might, we haven’t been able to locate the video of the incident, but we did find some highlights from the match, which turned out to be an entertaining one played between two rivals in front of a large crowd. Check out the body check that takes place during the first goal, about 45 seconds into the video. We’re not sure if our new favorite player named Fred was aware that he signed up to play Aussie Rules Football.

Fred. Got it. That should be an easy enough name to remember.
