A Name to Remember: Luis Suarez

By: Bob | June 27th, 2007

luis-suarez.jpgFor a country with a population of roughly 3.5 million, Uruguay sure does its part to contribute to the global demand for goal scoring footballers. Think Diego Forlan and Alvaro Recoba. The next wave of Uruguayan strikers will be on display this summer at the U-20 World Cup in Canada. While the long hair and quick strike capabilities of Palermo’s Edison Cavani will attract attention, another player worth keeping an eye on is Luis Suarez.

A 20-year-old who came up through the Club Nacional de Football system in Uruguay, he is an attacking midfielder with a knack for scoring goals. After scoring 12 goals for Nacional in 2005, he was sold to Groningen before the 2006-2007 season for $1 million, the most money the Dutch club has ever spent on a player.

In 29 games for Groningen, Suarez scored 9 league goals and a goal in the UEFA Cup against Partizan Belgrade. He has earned praise for being a physical footballer with great mobility. He signed on with Groningen for five years, but it is only a matter of time before he gets scooped up by a bigger club somewhere in Europe, making him A Name to Remember.

I'm pretty sure any Barca or Inter fan already remembers that name.
  • Anyone else think there were a few too many MISSED goal opportunities and swan dives in that video?

And that could very well be the dodgiest name to remember music yet, fantastic.
  • So many Uruguayans in the same post.
