A Name to Remember: Nashat Akram
By: Bob | July 23rd, 2007
If you were to compile a list of Iraqi players who have gone on to play in the big European lists it would not take you very long. That is because there has never been an Iraqi player in England, Spain, Italy, or the like. Nashat Akram is poised to become the first.
Much is being made about Iraq’s run in the Asian Cup. The team has advanced to the semifinals of the competition and at least temporarily has helped to bring a little joy to a country that could sure use some. One of the leaders of the Iraq team has been Akram, a 23-year-old playmaking midfielder.
Akram has played with the Saudi side Al-Shabab since 2004. He began his career domestically at the age of 14 playing for Salah Al-Deen and later Al-Shorta. He is currently out of contract and reportedly is being targeted by a number of European clubs including Sunderland whose coach Roy Keane is one of his idols.
Taking the leap to the next level is usually a challenge for players from the Middle East. Akram appears to have above average technical skills and he is an excellent passer. His foot speed and physical prowess are question marks. Whether or not he makes it in a big league, Akram is considered a hero by many in Iraq. It is hard not to root for him to succeed.
