A Name to Remember: Renato Augusto
By: Bob | May 9th, 2007
Is the world ready for another Brazilian attacking midfielder? Predicting future success is never a science but by all accounts 19-year-old Renato Soares de Oliveira Augusto has a bright career ahead of him. The Brazilian midfielder wears number 10 for the Rio club Flamengo and he could be headed to a big European club in the very near future.
As is the fashion in Brazil and in countries around the world, Renato Augusto has been dubbed “the next” one. “He will become the new Kaka in Europe, for whoever signs him,” said Renato’s Flamengo coach, Nery Franco, who blooded him in the first-team as a 17-year-old.
No pressure there, huh? Like the AC Milan stud, Renato Augusto has excellent on the ball speed and skill. At Flamenho his role has been to set up his teammates rather than to score goals. The usual cast of characters has been linked to Augusto. Chelsea and Liverpool both want him, and reportedly Manchester United have made a proposal for his services. Do you think they got down on their knees and gave him a ring?
Will he be the latest to come out of the Brazilian pipeline or will he be the latest to be more hype than substance? Time will tell, but he certainly is a Name to Remember. Here is some grainy video of Renato Augusto doing his thing.

Anyone else notice that the kid is wearing a different jersey number in almost every clip. I saw him wearing 10,9,7 and 23.

The guy is definitely good. Let’s hope the hype doesn’t put down his substance.

He’s a flop, technically is allright, but is not consistent. He disappears from the game most of the time, and then appears and shows great skill, but is not enough to make a difference in a big team, loses too much the ball on the pitch.

To mglz:
They don’t used fix numbering in Brazil. Numbers 1-11 are used by starters and the numbers outside of those are for bench players. He used 7 instead of 10 because a good veteran in Juninho Paulista used the prized 10.Posted from
