A Quick Look at the MLS Best XI 2007

By: Daryl | November 18th, 2007

Luciano Emilio MVPThere were some more MLS awards dished out at a fancy gala dinner on Saturday night, where I assume a very expensive spread was laid on. Luciano Emilio picked up the Newcomer of the Year award, which will look very nice on the DC United striker’s mantelpiece next to his MVP (pictured) and Golden Boot trophies. Not a bad first season for the Brazilian all in all. The 2007 Commissioner’s Award was presented to a very deserving Cobi Jones, for his services to soccer. He’s spent 12 years in MLS at one club, won something like a million caps for the US national team (actually it’s 164) and been an example to players everywhere. The long awaited MLS XI was also named, which is basically the dream team of the 2007 season. Read on to see who made it.

As determined by voting from MLS players, coaches, general managers and media, here’s what the 2007 MLS Best XI looks like…

Lining up 3-5-2:

Goalie: Brad Guzan (Chivas USA)
Defenders: Michael Parkhurst (New England Revolution), Eddie Robinson (Houston Dynamo), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA)
Midfielders: Christian Gomez (D.C. United), Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Dwayne De Rosario (Houston Dynamo), Ben Olsen (D.C. United), Guillermo Barros Schelotto (Columbus Crew)
Forwards: Luciano Emilio (D.C. United), Juan Pablo Angel (New York Red Bulls)

You’d be hard pressed to argue that any of these guys don’t deserve a shirt in the Best XI. But are there any players who were unucky to miss out?

I know Blanco only played half the season, but you’d be hard pressed to find one who influenced more games than him and transformed his team more.
