A Tote on the Intertoto Cup is a Sure Thing
By: Daryl | July 28th, 2007
If you’re looking for controversy in the 2007/8 football season, look no further than the Intertoto Cup where you’ll find two of the worst things in football. First we had Legia Warsaw fans rioting in Lithuania, now we might have match fixing in Estonia.
UEFA are investigating Estonian club TVMK Talinn after their 4-2 second leg defeat to (excellently named) Finnish club FC Honka. TVMK’s defeat was apparently preceded by some “lively betting” on a Honka victory.
TVMK President Piotr Sedin denies the allegations. “Let them investigate if they wish,” he said. “Fraud with the totaliser is not our problem.” If only he’d added something like “defending corners is our problem” then I’d be more inclined to believe him, but sudden surges in gambling activity with no real reason usually mean someone somewhere has done something dishonest.

You know, I was considering a post on this today, but I was hoping there would be some more developments. I’m not sure about this story – I haven’t heard just how significant the rise in betting was. Anyway, I would have thought that Honda were the favorites, meaning the payoff for their win couldn’t have been that great, unless it was some sort of pool system. Yeah, the Intertoto has been a mess this season. Only one more day, then it’s the UEFA Cup’s problem.

Dammit. Honka, not Honda. Sorry, Honka.
