Abba’s Latest Victim: Sunderland

By: Bob | December 11th, 2006

You can add the Sunderland football players to the lengthy list of people whose lives have forever been affected by the 70s Swedish pop icons Abba. The Black Cats got off to a dismal start in the English Championship league this season, but have turned things around of late. Instead of crediting new boss Roy Keane, the addition of Dwight Yorke or the improved play of his teammates, Sunderland midfielder Graham Kavanagh chalks up the change of fortunes to the choice of music in the team’s dressing room.

Kavanagh explains the key to Sunderland’s new success:

“We had a bit of Abba before a game this season. It might explain the kind of start we had. I don’t know who decided on it, but it wasn’t me.

“Dwight sorts it all out now, so there’s a bit of R&B and dance but no really hardcore stuff.”

Yes, it is a good thing the hardcore stuff has been jettisoned to other venues.
